1st August 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Simon Oldfield snatched a four-hour pole session on the Bridgewater Canal at Agden on Friday to catch a proper mixed bag of fish. He started with a couple of balls of groundbait with pinkie on the base of the far shelf, loose-feeding as needed to catch a steady stream of small roach. He also fed a long line at 14metres with chopped worm near some lilies, also trickling hemp-seed in another swim against the far bank bushes. Simon caught all morning on every line, roach, perch, and a surprise white koi carp from his worm swim.

David Brunet also had a mixed bag from Statham Pool on Sunday with lots of small roach plus better stamp ones, perch, skimmers, and even eels. I take it that waggler and maggots did the job.

Andy Humphreys enjoyed a great day's fishing at Appleton Reservoir last Thursday casting a waggler at around twenty yards out in 8ft of water. He had literally a bite every cast which accounted for a cracking net of roach ranging from a couple of ounces to around the pound mark for a total weight of 30 to 40lbs.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished in torrential rain on our Woodshaw Reservoir water at Aspull where John Johnson drew peg 2 and put together a mixed net of crucians and roach for a winning weight of 9-3-0. He fished the pole catching on both pellet and maggots. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne drew peg 6 in the same section to take second place with 6-14-6 made up of one bonus crucian with the rest roach caught on pole fished caster and maggot. Sixteen anglers fished.

Our Briers Cup Open Match took place on the Mersey last Sunday along the Victoria Park stretch where the river was running fast with a touch of colour. The winner Jimmy Byrne set up a groundbait feeder on peg 22 where fishing close in he caught a bonus bream plus thirty roach and perch for a weight of 10-2-0.  The runner-up Ade Green was on the adjacent peg 23 where he also fished a groundbait feeder but caught his fish on pinkie. He added two bonus bream to his 9-11-0 net which wasn't too far behind the winner and also lost good sized ones which definitely would have altered the order. You really needed bonus bream in the conditions and the best this week was around the 6lbs mark caught by Neil Buist which helped him into fourth place. Fifteen anglers fished.

Following a report from a member of some dead eels at Grey Mist the Environment Agency were called and visited promptly. They had been dead for some time and apparently had suffered from the Anguilla herpes virus which only affects eels.
