31st March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

After last weeks mega stocking of Ackers Pit and our Wigan fisheries there's even more good news this week when on Tuesday 30,000 dace and 10,000 roach were released into the River Mersey at Paddington Bank. The fish were averaging 3inches and were supplied courtesy of the Environment Agency Fisheries Department. Hopefully they should soon pack on weight in the invertebrate rich water conditions.

Ivan Mazurkiewicz aged 14years livened up a bright spring day at Grey Mist Mere when nobody was catching anything with the only fish of the day, a mirror carp of exactly 18lbs. Ivan tempted the fish using a Nash pineapple pop-up boilie.

Following our AGM last Tuesday I announced that I was negotiating with the United Utilities regarding the opening up Arley Reservoir at Worthington Lakes which have been normally closed from March 15th until June 16th.  Well, only the following day the good news came through that we can open it immediately. This means that only Adlington now remains closed so fill your boots and enjoy the good fishing that these lakes have on offer.

Looking at our match results gives a fair guide to how our canals are fishing and despite a few sections on the Warrington AA Winter League final having to struggle the result overall throughout our canal fisheries is very good for this time of the year. Good numbers of roach are shoaled up around Lymm Village and bread and caster accounting for most catches.

Late reports that a massive barbel weighing in at a staggering 16-8-0 was caught from our stretch of the River Ribble at Hurst Green. I have no more details at present but I am on the case. Any information please.

A member left a couple of Solar indicator head at Grey Mist Mere on Sunday if you are laying claim to these please contact me with a description and I will put you in contact with the honest angler who found them.

All the lock changes have now been completed on schedule so you old key will not open the locks on our car parks.  You can part exchange your old key at tackle shops on production of a 2009 paid up membership card for £2 otherwise a new key will cost you £5.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street will be open on Friday evening as usual between 7 & 9-30pm for subscriptions, new members, etc.

24th March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Friday last Ackers Pit benefited from a generous stocking of 1000 rudd and 1000 magnificent true crucian carp. Also on Tuesday of this week Woodshaw Reservoir received 1000 rudd, 200 crucian carp, and 100 chub. Johnsons Pool which has just benefited from new pegs all round saw its depleted fish stocks boosted with 300 crucians, 200 mirror carp, and 50 chub.  Similarly last but not least the Foster's Pool complex had 1000 rudd, 700 crucians, 300 mirror carp, and 50 chub spread between the four pools. The chub were stocked on two of them where sticklebacks have been a problem so these pests should be sorted out good style. All the fish were supplied by Will Fair from Hampton Springs.

A hardy band of anglers braved the gale force conditions for Mondays Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal. The winner Ron Durr included a skimmer bream of 1.5lbs in an otherwise all roach catch. Our Vice President Geoff Brooks even dusted off his tackle to come a close second with a nice net of roach for 5-5-2. Over 4.5lbs was needed to get in the frame and the lowest catch was just over 2lbs. Bread and caster accounted for most fish but third placed Harry Morris included 5 skimmers in his net allegedly taken on pellet.

Members currently fly-fishing on the River Alyn must respect our boundaries as per the new map book that clearly shows members where they can fish and which definitely does not extend to the mill pool. This area is out of bounds under the EA local byelaws. Catches of small grayling are mainly taking nymphs.

To date all the lock changes have been completed on schedule and should all be sorted by weekend. Don't forget you can part exchange your old key at tackle shops on production of a 2009 paid up membership card for £2 otherwise a new key will cost you £5.

Whilst at Cicely Mill Pool on Tuesday afternoon I witnessed and photographed 16 year old Lewis Cookson landing a common carp which weighed in at 16-12-0. He caught it on a single 14mm spicy prawn boilie.

The Congleton Round Table Charity event on the Macclesfield canal threw up the top three weights to just over 9lbs from our stretch at Congleton basin. If you fancy some action yourself this weekend there is a Warrington Squad Fund match on Sunday meet 9am at McDonalds. Book on with Helen 01925 635486 or Craig 07984 859701.

17th March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Gary Mannion had a good session on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane last week when he pole fished chopped worm and caster for an impressive net of roach and bream estimated at 40lbs. This report comes only days after a member complained that he had fished the same pegs without a single bite; well that's fishing for you. Gary set his stall out for the big perch that seem to favour this area but his first fish was a roach over a pound and it was hectic sport thereafter with only a couple of perch in the catch.

News from one of our under fished waters, namely the tiny River Bollin of good catches of quality roach being taken on stick float and small red worm. This overgrown and wild small river is more than capable of a few surprises.

The Dane by contrast was out of sorts last weekend with only a few chub and small grayling being caught. Our bailiff Ron Williams reports that member Dave Davies had the best fish, a chub of exactly 4lbs.

The Last river match of the season on the Mersey was a poor affair with weights well down despite the near perfect conditions. Barry Chambers only needed 3-5-0 to take the winnings with Mersey veteran Paul Harding putting 1-15-0 on the scales for second place.

The Macclesfield Canal at Congleton was consistent with Mike Chung taking a well deserved win with an all roach catch of 7-13-15 taken on bread and caster. Second placed Stu Hardman redeemed himself after his disaster of last week on the same venue when he was battered from both sides by, one of whom won the match. Stu was so despondent this past week that he even considered putting his tackle on EBay. For the record you needed at least 5lbs for a section win.

Nineteen anglers turned out for the disabled & over 60's match which saw Ron Durr win with just over 4lbs of roach and skimmers. The turnout is steadily increasing and with the good craic amongst the regulars this is becoming a popular event.

Sometime in the next week to ten days we will be stocking our Wigan waters, Fosters Pools, Johnsons Pool, Woodshaw Reservoir, and of course Ackers Pit. Species include rudd, roach, cruciens, small carp, and chub; although all waters will not be getting this mix.

Tuesday 10 March 2009

10th March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Joe Dagnall took the individual top spot in the Warrington AA Local Winter League despite suffering from a severe dose of dehydration. He fished pole and punch bread for a mixed net of skimmers and roach. Andy Lewis from the next peg followed closely on his heels with a similar catch putting 8-6-0 on the scales. Clampits took the team honours on the day with 24 points. Teams overall with only one match to fish looks to be a certain win for Warrington Red who only need to turn up to win the league flowed by Cheshire Red, with Clampits and Cheshire Gold battling for third place.

Our Sunday National Squad fund match on the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton really produced some astounding sport on a wild and windy day. Committee member Graham Belton drawn on the basin put 9lbs on the scales to win with over 1.5lbs to spare. He fished a mixture of punch, casters, and worm for a net of skimmers, roach, and big perch. Neil Davies had a similar net for runner-up spot with 7-6-0. Craig Richie's catch of eleven roach taken on caster and waggler tactics could have possibly won but a few missed bites proved expensive.

Grey Mist Mere is still producing some reasonable tench catches but only a few carp have been reported.

Martin James had a good session on the River Dane on Sunday netting eleven chub in the 3.5 to 4lbs range. He moved swims a few times and used the simple but deadly method of free-lining a chunk of bread. A few small grayling also being caught on maggot.

Just a reminder that the coarse fish close season closes at midnight on Saturday 14th March so if you fancy a last chuck we are running the very last match of the season on this sad day, draw 8am Victoria Park.

The membership booklets fisheries have now all been posted so if you have not received yours by Monday please ring me immediately. If paying by post send only the membership booklet for payment. Also please read the coloured notice within your membership pack regarding key changes.

3rd March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

There have been mixed reports from the River Dee but the best was a catch of sixteen grayling for over 23lbs. This quality catch was taken by member Alan Coles from our Shocklach fishery using a maggot feeder and double red maggot on the hook. George Green fishing at Worthenbury reports eleven to 4lbs taken on the stickfloat and bronze maggot.

The world loves a trier so after a number of attempts the fish of the month competition for February was won by Jamie Hankinson with a capture of a superbly marked pike of 16-12-0 caught on the 21st February from the tiny River Wyre. The fish fell for float fished smelt.

Keith Green just missed out with a personal best tench of 6-9-0 from Grey Mist Mere, better luck next time Keith.

A rare report from our Moat Fishery by keen member Dave Brinkley who after battling his way through brambles thought he had found the fishing equivalent of the lost world. His first cast with a tiny Mepps resulted in a swirl of a big fish as it missed the lure. However the second cast was met with a vicious take which saw a 6.5lbs pike in the net. This was soon followed by a smaller jack after which Dave had to leave for home but with a return visit imminent.

The Mersey match saw a change of fortunes with a few more fish on the feed which pleased regular Paul Harding who put 2.5lbs of roach on the scales for top spot. Runner up Mike Thornbury was only a few ounces light with a skimmer bream catch.

The Macclesfield Canal national squad fund match at Scholar Green was won by Ros Whiteman who included a cracking perch of 2-7-0 taken on caster in his 5-7-4 net. An all roach catch of 5-2-12 taken on bread punch by Gary Mannion placed him second. The average catch was over 3lbs per man.

The membership booklets have suffered a delay due to printing problems but are now back on track and are due to go out this week. We have separated the maps from the booklet and produced a superb colour map book complete with post codes for satnav owners. Although we do not condone drinking and driving they usually refer to the nearest pub as fisheries as a rule do not have post codes. If paying by post send only the membership booklet for payment.

Bailiff Pete Copsey has organised a working party on our Rixton Fishery on Sunday, 15th March 2009. Meet 9am on car park.
