28th March 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Matty Finch and his son Koree aged 10years enjoyed their Saturday overnight session on Grey Mist this past weekend. The keen youngster ended up with a PB tench of 8lbs plus a mirror carp of 15lbs beating his dad who only managed one tench around the 7lbs mark. Evidently when the pair are on the water it is gloves off with no holds barred for who ends up with the best catch. Bait was sweetcorn and Mainline cell boilies. Well done Koree.

On Sunday Robert Ledson christened his brand new Warrington Anglers membership choosing Phoenix Park Lake for his first visit to one of our fisheries. Fishing with a maggot feeder he ended up with four tench plus a pike which fell for dead-bait. Robert is looking forward to his next choice of venue.

Ian Simms enjoyed his leisurely and productive lure fishing session on the Bridgewater Canal at Agden on Monday. He was rewarded with two jack-pike both taken on a small Rapala lure.

The Dynamic Duo (Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner) are teetering on the edge of taking up golf following their visit this week to High Legh. The nearest they got to seeing an actual fish was when Ken was snapped with what was probably a carp and Dave had a few knocks. A few fish were taking the mickey topping on the surface but not in a feeding mood. This pair are legends and I really hope that they 'bag-up' on their next outing😊.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall Trees and Jimmy Byrne who drew opposite the tennis courts was the winner with forty small roach for 2-15-10 all caught on liquidised bread and punch. Dave Blears took the runner-up spot close behind Jimmy with just over an ounce separating them with a weight of 2-14-0 which included three perch and roach taken on pinkie. Eighteen anglers fished.

Some members were unaware that the Weaver Navigation is covered by the River Coarse Fish Closed Season so it is closed from 15th March and reopens on 'the glorious 16th June.'

A reminder that our AGM is on Thursday at Grappenhall Ex-servicemen's Club starting at 8pm. Current paid up membership cards must be produced at the door.

Work party on Sunday 2nd April at Rixton Claypits 8-30am start…help improve your fishery, any time you can give is much appreciated by our volunteers.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their membership book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT where mail is collected and dealt with most days. 21st March 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Phil Hancock started off his four-hour session on Grey Mist on Tuesday with a tench, landed just as Phil Brown joined him carrying only a fold-up seat. Phil Hancock had two rods set-up, both with a maggot feeder and maggot on the hook. However, it wasn't too long before Phil B raided H's biscuits and coffee and even during a brief go on one of the rods landed a tench and lost a carp!  H ended up with seven tench and lost two with 90% being caught on one rod which obviously had 'hit the spot.' It goes without saying that it was a very enjoyable day for both members.

Garry Whitehead had a morning pike session at Sandiway Lakes on Thursday where he moved around fishing both lakes using Fox Replicant lures which accounted for two of the toothy predators. A change to drifted dead-bait accounted for a third.

On Monday Neil Plunkett sat for a bite-less three hours at Rixton Claypits until he sorted out the right approach for the day to end up with ten bream and a bonus tench of around 3lbs. It was interesting he noted that the methods and baits that had worked well for him 4 weeks ago (groundbait and maggot or liquidised bread with bread punch) couldn't buy a bite. On the day all fish came to method feeder with micro-pellets and 8mm punched luncheon meat on the hook.

Mike Pritchard was out again on Saturday where he enjoyed his weekly three-hour session on the Bridgewater Canal. This week he was at Walton opposite the rhododendrons using his favourite 9.5ft rod and home-made waggler set-up with pinkie on the hook. He ended up with 5 to 6lbs of roach and perch with the best chunky silvers caught from his caster swim.

The Dynamic Duo (Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner) decided this week that they would try their hand at Phoenix Park Lake. Ken stuck with his favourite two methods of float and feeder and after 5hours had managed only a single perch on maggot. Dave was after something bigger and ended up with a transparent gudgeon plus a 2.5 pounder, pity it was a terrapin! I will keep the promised golf clubs for another week😊 They both reckoned that its still a cracking place to go.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished again on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton and saw the return of Bud Lee to the series for the first time since he won it on the 16th March 2020 just as Covid kicked off. Well, true to form Bud clocked up another decisive win with an all roach catch on bread punch with a weight of 3-12-0 from a peg opposite the rhododendrons. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 2-15-4 of roach using both bread and pinkie. Eighteen anglers fished.

Head bailiff Jay Makin kicked-off his session on Grey Mist on Tuesday with four cracking tench, the best around the 7lbs mark also later in the afternoon he managed to tempt one of our recent stock fish, a mirror which went in at 23lbs but he couldn't weigh it as the batteries had gone flat in his scales. A lesson learned😊 His fish came to solid PVA bags filled with Sticky Baits 4mm manilla pellets and groundbait with the business end loaded with their 14mm chocolate orange pop-up boilies.

Regular contributor Mike Pritchard was out again on Saturday where he enjoyed a three-hour session on the Bridgewater Canal near Houghs Bridge.  reporting a catch of over fifty fish, mainly chunky roach along with two perch and four hybrids. He started on bread but as bites slowed changed to pinkie and was on a bite a chuck fishing a small waggler on the far side of the track. He landed some decent stamp roach and hybrids until he ran out of bait…still managed to catch six further roach on his last two pinkies until they were just skin on the hook!

Thanks to the torrential rain our last Members Mersey Series of the river coarse fishing season was able to take place on Sunday. The winner Jimmy Byrne described it as at best a two-hour match as from the start nobody caught beyond that period due to the worsening flood conditions with tree branches and general debris coming down the river making fishing more or less impossible. Jimmy caught all his fish in the first ninety minutes with not a bite after that time as was the case for the majority of anglers. His catch from peg 54 consisted of 7 skimmers and 2 roach for a weight of 8-6-0 all taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot at about 15metres. Neil Buist aka The Engine was the runner-up from peg 58 with a net of roach plus a bonus 1.5lbs hybrid for a total 5-7-0. Fourteen Anglers fished. Finally, many thanks to Al Faulkner, Jimmy Byrne, Ray Boden, and all those who helped to run this series often under trying conditions.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished again on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton and saw The Breadman himself (George Barber) the winner with 7-2-0 of roach caught on pole and the white stuff from a peg just to the right of Walton Lea Bridge. Pete Jones was in second place from the adjacent peg with a similar net weighing in at 5-7-0. Fifteen anglers fished.

7th March 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

New member Mike Halewood ended up with his first fish from Grey Mist Mere this week, which he describes as a, "Stunning scaly 22-8-0 mirror." It did come after four sessions but worth the wait… we sometimes forget it is still winter. Mike caught it on a white OG pop-up and chod rig. Head bailiff Jay Makin on an overnight session also managed to tempt a 22lbs mirror from the Mist to open up his 2023 account. His fish came to a pink mulberry pop-up with the PVA bag filled with 4mm pellets and crushed manilla boilies.

On Friday James Shimmon using solid bags with 12mm CCW C-Nut boilies as hook bait enjoyed his day session on The Mount at Buckley being rewarded with two mirrors and a common carp. New member Chris Roberts made the most of the first few hours use of his Warrington Anglers Association membership this past weekend at this popular fishery. He presented two zig rigs at 4ft depth to catch two carp, the best a common just under 12lbs. Always worth a visit for a confidence booster😊

Mike Pritchard had a busy Saturday session on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton reporting a catch of over fifty fish, mainly chunky roach along with two perch and four hybrids. He fished a small waggler with pinkie but the better-quality roach came later to caster.

A few jack-pike reported being caught on the Bridgewater Canal from the Preston Brook area, still the exercise is an additional benefit😊

Our Members Mersey Series on Sunday was cancelled again due to damage to Howley Weir that has caused unsafe low river levels for the past few weeks. The level will be inspected on Friday but unless there is a massive influx of water it is not looking too promising that it will go ahead.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was back on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton and was a complete reversal from last week which saw possibly the lowest weights that I have reported for some time. This week's winner Alan Brown drew a peg opposite the Walton Park buildings and set the scene with a cracking roach catch all taken on bread-punch and weighing in at  8-10-0. The runner-up was The Breadman himself (George Barber), as you would expect also on the white stuff which produced a roach net of 7-12-0. There was also a fair few 4 and 5lb catches which are not too bad considering this is only a four-hour match. Seventeen Anglers fished.

Don't forget that any member on our waters must be able to produce to our bailiffs a fully paid up 2023 membership book which has a current passport size photograph affixed inside the rear cover where indicated. It is not valid without and no excuses will be accepted. Also, we are fed up with some members ignoring our rule 13 that single use bottles, cans/tins/plastic packaging are not allowed on any of our fisheries. A simple solution is to buy reusable containers to accommodate the contents, they are not expensive.
