25th June 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th June 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Bill Last and Bruce Ruscoe fished Grey Mist on Saturday no doubt encouraged by a recent session where Bill caught ten tench the best weighing in at 9-10-0. Bill reckons that he put Bruce 'on the flier' which saw him land specimens of 7-6-0, 4-0-0, 8-6-0, 7-10-0, 7-0-0, 9-3-0, 8-3-0, and 6-8-0. Bill was still more than happy with his catch of 8-0-0, 7-10-0, and 8-1-0.

Ian Johnson enjoyed his red-letter day on the Mount at Buckley when fishing pole and maggot he soon had the roach feeding well and after a hectic hour and a half he decided that it was time to change to caster as he had been including them in his loose fed red maggots. Although it did slow his catch rate there was a much better stamp of the red finned beauties. Ian lost count of the numbers of fish but said that his catch did include some cracking fish that were easily around 1.5lbs.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Kingsway allotments saw Dave Brooks the winner with 16-1-0 made up of one bonus bream of 4lbs backed up by 12lbs of roach caught on pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne took second place fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot and included two bonus bream of 5lbs apiece, a skimmer, and the rest roach for a weight of 14-5-0. The spread of marginal weed is a good for the river which gives essential cover for fish, but obviously it is also encroaching on some pegs so match organiser Ray Boden advises the members should include a weed rake in their kit.

The best weight since the opening of the new season came from our Sunday Mersey Series fished at Victoria Park. Kevin Hall made the most of his peg which produced four quality bream to 6lbs, a few smaller ones plus roach for 36-8-0. His catch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot saw him with over 20lbs to spare from second placed Neil Buist's 14-2-0 made up of six skimmers plus roach taken on pole and maggot.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished at Pickerings Bridge and produced lower weights than should be expected. Despite this there was some positive news in that the match length was absolutely alive with fry and small fish which hopefully bodes well for the future. The match was won by Rod Frazer with a couple of perch plus roach for 3-2-8.  Jimmy Byrne drew an end peg and his catch of small roach was 'ounced' by the winner when the scale needle stuck at 3-1-0 which put him in runner-up spot.

Thanks to those members who take the trouble to send in catch reports which are really appreciated by fellow members as it helps them to know how waters are fishing and plan their outings. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

With many of our rivers on the Severn catchment flooded and unfishable for the 16th June opening of the coarse fish river close season at least locally the Dane at Holmes Chapel produced some sport for Martin James with three chub on legered crust. The Mersey match on Sunday at Latchford was won by Derek Bibby with a weight of 29-8-0 made up of bream to 5lbs, skimmers, and roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Jimmy Byrne took second place with 23-3-0 of bream on the same method.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match the following day on the river at Kingsway was won by Jimmy Byrne using groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight od 7-8-0 which included a bonus 3lbs bream plus roach and skimmers. Mike Worley was the runner-up with a catch of three bream and a roach on the same method for 6-10-0.

Its always great to hear new members catching quality fish soon after joining our club, this Sunday was a good day all round which saw Declan Evens catch his first twenty pounder a chunky mirror from Appleton reservoir and Karl Kenny had a PB with a mirror 22lbs on the same venue.

Lucas ProceK who voluntarily carries out a lot of work on Phoenix park Lake had a productive morning session on Sunday. He had already raked a few pegs clear of weed on Friday and set-up on one of them giving it a further raking before he introduced any bait which must have attracted a lot of tench as he had three in first 30 minutes, all around 3lbs mark, followed by cracking 10 pounder. Lucas cast his second rod to the far bank and landed 16lbs carp. His tench rod also produced a 22lbs mirror. Lucas loose-fed hemp and some sweetcorn and used a combination of 6 and 8mm expander pellets, boilies, meat, and maggots on the hook.  Biggest carp was on expander and maggot combo and the tench definitely liked expander on its own.

Our bailiff reports that the access track to our stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury is very rough with a number of deep potholes at the moment and you shouldn't attempt it unless you have a 4x4. It has probably not been helped by all the heavy rain and floods of late. Any member brave enough to venture down there please let me know how you fare.

A new Severn byelaw came into force on the 15th June 2019 that it is catch and release only for salmon on the River Severn and its tributaries.

Gareth Wright took his son George aged ten years for a day's fishing on Sunday to the Mount at Buckley where he set him up with an eighteen-year-old 3 metre whip with heavy elastic, just in case. The youngster had caught a fair number of roach and perch on maggot when his elastic shot out and a fight was on. It ended when after a ten-minute tussle a mirror of 11lbs lay safely in the landing net. George followed this with an even bigger mirror of 15lbs which took a liking to his corn and maggot cocktail and took all of twenty minutes to land during which his dad was duly impressed by the skilful way his son played the fish. As a matter of record the biggest fish ever previously landed on this ancient whip by his dad was a 6lbs tench!

There are always rumours flying around regarding big fish from our Sandiway Lakes fisheries and this week is no exception with whispers of a forty from the large lake. I understand that a number of thirties have also been landed from both lakes. Whilst I have no confirmation, I am always hopeful that the captors may eventually send me some catch shots for identification purposes and to look at growth rates.

Anthony Rough fished the Trent & Mersey Canal on Sunday morning starting his session fishing bread punch on the pole towards the far bank reeds where he caught well from the start before bites dried up. A change to loose-feeding pinkies with a single on the hook brought the fish back on the feed catching roach, perch, and gudgeon, and all in all Anthony had a very enjoyable morning.

Dee bailiff Mike Lewis gave me a late report from our stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury where on 26th May when he landed a fresh run salmon measuring 36inches in length on a fly with the dubious name of a 'naughty nurse' and lost another. All this for fifty quid a year.

Mike Pritchard fished at Ackers Pit on Saturday where he kicked off with pinkie but soon changed to caster for a better stamp of roach to 12oz. He ended up with thirty roach plus a few rudd of the same size all taken on waggler tactics.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was on the Bridgewater Canal at Daresbury and was won for the second week in succession by Lennie Dutton with a weight of 4-7-0 of roach on bread punch and perch to 6oz on worm fished down the track. Second placed Ron Durr included a bonus bream of around 2lbs in his 3-10-10 net of fish. I hope the weather improves for their Mersey match venue next week.

We have had a few members of late sending night booking requests outside the stated times on the permit. These are strictly 9am to 6pm and anything outside these hours won't be booked.

The Mount at Buckley is still producing some excellent sport and working party member David Trusler reports a couple of days excellent fishing on the middle and main lake catching quality roach and tench on quiver tip using corn and home-made cheese paste. He also gave heartening news that tench up to 3/4lb have been showing. Dave Mather enjoyed a four-hour session with some cracking roach well over 1.5lb taken on pole and hemp.

After a few weeks when weekends were taken up with other unavoidable priorities Kyle Tilbury decided on a quick overnight session on Grey Mist on Sunday where he fished his usual tactics of a snowman set-up over a scattering of boilies. His first run came just as he was settling down for the night, a leather carp of 16lbs. Just after the bewitching hour his other rod went and a 15lbs mirror, followed by another of 14lbs were the result. Kyle reckons the midge bites were a small price to pay. Also, on the Mist new member christened his new card with a 22lbs common on his first visit to a WAA water.

Phil Lacy followed up a new PB carp of 19-8-0 last week on double red maggot and corn and went on to smash his tinca PB on Sunday, landing fish of 6-12-0, 8-2-0. And 8-8-0. He had set himself a modest season target of 6lbs so to say he is chuffed is an understatement. What happens next season Phil?

Reports have filtered back that a new member was told that 'the unwritten rule' on Sandiway of where day angers can fish as it is unfair to night permit holders. Let me dispel this completely, there are no unwritten rules and every member has the absolute right to fish any peg on a 'first come first served basis.'

Working Party on Sandiway Lakes this weekend on Saturday meeting on bottom carpark little lake around 9-30am. Anyone fishing 'the beach' is asked to vacate by 10am for necessary works. There's plenty to do, peg repairs, general tidying, and snag removal so all volunteers welcome.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick and was won by Lennie (End Peg) Dutton with a weight of 2-9-8 of small roach and gudgeon. Graham Belton in second place was less than 2oz adrift with 2-7-12. There wasn't 8oz between the first four weight albeit they were on the low side.
