15th August 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

New member David Walsh fished Rixton Claypits on Saturday for the first time where he setup two rods, one using 16mm pineapple pop-ups, and the other on 12mm krill boilies. It soon became evident that the latter were attracting bream and not as he had hoped carp, his target species, so he changed to a 16mm krill wafter but he couldn't escape the bream despite changing baits yet again. The result was that he ended up with eighteen bream, the best to just under 5lbs which would have been more than welcome to others. 😊 And yes, he did manage one small carp…that's angling folks, better luck next time David.

Andy Corr and his fishing mate Andy Donegan were on the Trent & Mersey Canal on Sunday where they both enjoyed bites all day from tiny roach along with perch, skimmers, and bream. Worth a visit if you fancy a canal fishing session with plenty of bites to keep you focussed.

Robert Wilson enjoyed a session at Grey Mist last week where after removing another 'anglers' litter from the swim before setting up was justly rewarded with a fine brace of tench. He fished using an 8metre whip with a single piece of corn on the hook over a bed of hemp and adding occasional freebies for good measure.

Wayne Stuart Cole caught a cracking barbel this weekend hooked on the very bottom extremity of our Ribble fishery, although actually landing it from the adjacent downstream stretch. It fell to a salmon boilie and it weighed in at 9-8-0. Wayne's best barbel to date from our stretch is 11-14-0.

We don't get many reports from our River Severn stretch at Loton Park which despite the access issues is a lovely part of the river. Last week Jeffrey Olstead fished there in not what you would call ideal conditions with the water running high and highly coloured. Despite this he reports catching a decent sized bream around five to six pounds, a species which he had never previously caught from the river. It was taken on maggot in a slack close to the bank.

Wayne Murphy fished an overnight Saturday session on our Appleton Reservoir fishery using a krill bottom bait with a corn topper and feeding krill boilies. He ended up with four carp, the biggest weighing 26-4-0. He will definitely be going again.

Just a word of warning to the few irresponsible anglers who visit this popular venue and chose not the park their vehicles on the car parks provided but leave them elsewhere around the fishery…they will have their membership card seized…no excuses!

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge, Thelwall. Mike Worley fished the pole at 11metres alternating between caster and maggot to take a decisive win with a weight of 8-8-8 made up of roach and perch plus three bonus bream. The Breadman (aka George Barber) was the runner-up with an all-roach net of 6-12-3 caught on the pole using one of his homemade floats and his special rig; bait as you would expect 'the white stuff'.  Fifteen anglers fished.

Our strictly rod only Second Association Contest took place on Sunday along the Victoria Park stretch of the Mersey. With only an ounce separating each of the top three anglers it was a really close match, but Neil Buist aka The Engine managed to top the weights from peg 31.  He fished a groundbait feeder and maggot to catch two bonus bream and a decent skimmer to add to his net of roach and perch for a winning weight of 11-11-0. Match organiser Ray Boden took second place with 11-10-0 of roach and perch caught on the float and pinkie using his 18ft rod. Eighteen anglers fished.
