8th August 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A predator angler at heart Garry Whitehead enjoyed a session on the Weaver Navigation on Sunday evening fishing just under the motorway bridge using a tailed micro lure fishing for perch. He ended up with over twenty-five of them caught in the last hour of daylight.

The following day Garry was back there again but this time spending an hour before tea in the early evening on this occasion watching his son Thomas aged 4years catch a net of quality roach and perch. This youngster has come on in leaps and bounds in the past few months…on this occasion simply fishing with the top two of his dad's pole using maggot at a depth of around 3feet.

Our bailiff team were out at Woodshaw Reservoir on Tuesday keeping the fishery immaculate as usual and finishing off the mowing. One member was fishing on peg 6 from 10am until 3-45pm and reported that it was the best days fishing he has had. The angler's tally was sixteen decent crucians plus quality roach. Worth a visit.

Mike Pritchard enjoyed his regular Saturday session on the River Mersey just upstream from Howley Weir despite the level coming up almost 18inches whilst he was fishing. Undeterred he fished a home-made waggler at rod tip alternating between bronze maggot and caster. Mike ended up with a mixed net of thirty-two fish made up of 6 perch, 2 dace, and a small chub, the rest roach. The better stamp roach up to 1lb were caught on caster along with a decent sized perch.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Davenham Road, Billinge. Al Faulkner drew opposite the mouth of the marina and mainly fished a small groundbait feeder to catch bream and skimmers plus some smaller roach on the pole for a winning weight of 10-3-0. Baits were maggot, caster, and worm. Local angler Rod Fraser was the runner-up with 6-15-14 of mainly roach taken on pole fished maggot and caster. Sixteen anglers fished.

The Tom James Open Match took place on the Mersey on Sunday, again along the Victoria Park stretch where following the previous days heavy rain the river was understandably running through 'fast and coloured'. Despite drawing the unfancied peg 19 Ade Green was the clear winner and absolutely smashed it with a cracking weight of 24-15-0 made up of half a dozen bream to which he added around a pound of silvers. Ade mainly fished the tip and banded pellet over his pole line and over doubled the weight of second placed Eddie Frangleton. Ed who was close-by at peg 21 added a brace of bream to his catch of perch and roach taken fishing pole feeder with worm and yellow maggot on the hook for 11-5-0. Eleven anglers fished.
