22nd August 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Bill Hewitt fished on the Mount at Buckley for the first time on Monday with his mate who ended up with a nice mirror carp whereas he only managed a few roach and perch. Despite this Bill was quite happy and described the fishery as 'a beautiful water' despite having to remove litter from his peg left by some pathetic excuse for an angler.

Phil Brown enjoyed his day session on Appleton Reservoir this week with just one carp weighing in at 16-8-0, still his visit as usual was thoroughly enjoyed. Graham Smith fished the opposite bank of the reservoir targeting the roach where he fished a small groundbait feeder with red maggot and a few micro pellets in the mix. He ended up with thirty-two roach, best around a pound.

It was a family day out for Garry Whithead who was out on the Weaver Navigation over the weekend with his young son Thomas, and father-in-law, watched by his wife. All caught, mainly perch on the short pole with probably the best catch going to the 4year old keen youngster who has certainly mastered the method.

The Dynamic Duo (Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt) braved the Friday downpours on the Bridgewater Canal last Friday, craftily protected by what Dave described as the 'big concrete brolly' oblivious to the sound of the motorway above them. Ken fished a 7metre whip and maggot for a few roach and perch to 8oz with Dave ending up ledgering maggot for perch and one bream around the 2lbs mark. They were happy with their session and the fact that they stayed dry.

Mick Clitheroe had planned for a trip to the River Severn but circumstances dictated a change of plan so he decided on a three hour Tuesday session nearer to home on the River Wyre. It was running clear and he stuck to his usual tactics of feeder fished groundbait and crushed pellets with luncheon meat on the hook. His first three casts resulted in two chub, one around the 3lbs mark, missed the next bite, then landed a four pounder before it went quiet. A move to another peg brought a surprise in the shape of an otter casually swimming past…he had a small chub then nothing so called it a day.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Davenham Road, Billinge. Rod Fraser drew peg 3 on the Northwich side of Billinge bridge in the narrows and fished the pole for a net of mainly roach on caster for a winning weight of 9-15-2. Only two pegs separated the winner from second placed Bas Chambers who drew at the start of the match catching a similar net of mainly roach for 8-7-3. The other two in the frame were the opposite side of the bridge on the marina boats and caught mainly small roach and perch mainly on maggot. A good turnout this week with twenty-two anglers at the draw.

Our Mersey Series members match took place on Sunday along the Victoria Park stretch of the Mersey. It was virtually a bream-free match barring one around 3lbs caught by Phil Stevens so the winner Harry Billing who fished the pole throughout weighed 8-10-0 of roach and perch taken on caster. Ray Boden hung on to his last weeks second place, again fishing the pole but with red maggot for a net of roach and perch for 7-14-0. Sixteen anglers fished.
