18th December 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th December 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

All our fisheries are now ice free and I hope it stays this way. Our Wigan bailiff team tell me that Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir is producing some good sport following the thaw, mainly roach and the occasional crucian. This pocket sized fishery is worth a visit.

Jim Spellman soon got amongst the carp at the Mount fishery using simple method feeder tactics and adding some dampened micro-pellets to his ground-bait mix with small cubes of hair-rigged meat on the hook. Considering the diverse and changeable weather conditions he was more than satisfied with his eleven fish catch. Best fish, although not a specimen was a mirror of about 12lbs but it certainly beats blank sessions such as my own two recent outings.

Bad news is that some kind person has broken into our palisade fenced compound at Grey Mist Mere and was probably sleeping rough on Friday evening. A fire was lit in an old oil drum which spread to stored timber and then to our portaloo. Only the toilet roll holder remained and the intense heat caused a lot of damage to and within our store container. If any member has any information please contact either myself at the number below or the police who are investigating. In the interim members will be required to make their own toilet arrangements (to be taken home along with any other empty packaging).

Trevor Bainbridge won our Disabled& Over 60's match on Monday with 2-10-0 of roach to bread punch and as luck would have it a change to worm fished down the track added a bonus perch to his catch. Only ounces separated the next three places and saw Jimmy Byrne relegated into fourth place being beaten by Pete Critchley and Lennie (end peg) Dutton. Please note below the temporary draw venue for the Christmas Eve match.

The Sunday Mersey Series was even harder than previous weeks and until the river settles down next weeks match on the 23rd has been cancelled but there will be a Boxing Day Special to give members a break from all that Christmas pud and turkey. For the record Roy Everson only needed 12ounces for the win and Ross Wightman was runner up with 9ounces. I don't think I have seen it produce such poor weights so it surely can only improve.

Merry Christmas to you all and although I expect that not many anglers will out fishing over this festive holiday I really would appreciate any catch reports. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 8-30pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

11th December 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th December 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Just a quick update on last Wednesdays stocking at Association owned Sandiway Lakes, the two mirrors I mentioned at 26lbs actually weighed 27-2-0 and 27-1-0 and were the largest so far produced and supplied by V S Fisheries. These fish should rocket in size and are the fastest growers from around 9000 fish and are only 6.5 years old! The 28 mirrors and two commons released into the small lake averaged 8.3lbs and if current growth rates are anything to go by this also should be a pretty awesome fishery in the future, not just for carp but for roach, rudd, perch, tench, and bream.

The Disabled& Over 60's match on Monday was fished in the 'dead length' as most areas were covered in ice. This is getting to be a bit repetitive but well done to Jimmy Byrne  who won yet again, this time with 5-11-0 of small roach and skimmers taken on the pole and punch bread. Close behind was Ron Durr with a similar net of fish for 5-7-8.There were lots of 2 and 3lb weights which for this time of the year is good news indeed. Pete Critchley spent an age playing a pike before being told 'they don't count' and veteran angler Geoff Brooks complained that he had a total of 116 fish and didn't even win his section. More serious was that he didn't have the time to eat his meat and potato pie!

The Sunday Mersey Series again fished really hard and with extra water and debris in the river. Paul Harding added a successive win to his belt with 6-2-0 which included roach plus a bonus bream. Match organiser Ross Wightman was runner up and back in the frame but with a meagre 14ounces.

Members are reminded that when visiting our Wide Hole fishery at Poynton that they should either park on our land or on the public car park. On no account must they park on the lane that runs adjacent to our fishery.

The neatly bagged but embarrassing growing mound of members rubbish has been removed by volunteers from the car park on the small lake. It really leaves me speechless with the moronic behaviour of a minority of our members, surely if you bring it with you it is no great strain to take away the empty packaging. Be warned the committee are adamant that any member found depositing rubbish on or near any of our fisheries will receive an automatic life ban. Likewise this also applies on any of our fisheries for being in possession/consuming alcohol or drugs, violence, or any fish welfare issues including illegally introducing or transferring fish. No warning, just a straight ban.
Reminder that existing night permits expire at the end of the month and are available from HQ on a Friday evening or by post. There has been an increase to £35 for the senior permit but the junior remains unchanged.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 8-30pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

4th December 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th December 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

With the cold and wet weather Ackers Pit has been almost devoid of anglers this past week or so, however committee member Mike Worley can't get enough of the place. With the prevailing clear water conditions Mike has been fishing running line tactics using a small crystal waggler fished at two rods distance. At the business end was a size 22 barbless fine wire hook tied to .08 line. On Saturday the only difference being that part of the fishery was covered with ice, but undeterred he started by feeding a few pinkies with big maggot on the hook and soon started picking up roach in the 12oz bracket. He ended his short session with two dozen plump red fins.

A bit of good news is that on Wednesday (5th December) before the Guardian goes to print we will hopefully be stocking the remainder of the carp ordered for Sandiway Lakes. It looks like there will be approximately 30 C4 fish for the small lake and two 26lbs mirrors for the larger fishery. They are of course being supplied by VS Fisheries and come with a known pedigree. There are also bream, roach, and carp due shortly for Appleton Reservoir.

On Saturday Jimmy Byrne headed the individual weights in our Warrington Local League with a mixed net of roach and skimmers for 6-11-12 all taken on bread punch. By contrast second placed Ross Wightman had an all roach net of 6-2-12 on caster. Cheshire Gold took team honours with 69 points followed by Saints on 62.

The Sunday Mersey Series fished really hard and with extra water in the river everyone opted for feeder tactics. Winner Paul Harding had 3lbs of small roach and in the frame again was Jimmy Byrne with a similar catch for 2-3-0.

The Disabled& Over 60's Fur & Feather match fished on Monday at Statham was won by Jimmy Byrne with 2-8-2 of small roach taken on the pole and punch bread. Second place was joint between George Barber and Pete Critchley, both on 2-6-2. Running in tandem with these matches throughout the year was the John Lavery Memorial Trophy for honorary members and those over 65years. Run on a points basis Jimmy Byrne was a clear winner of the series with 11 points followed by George Barber on 19.  Thanks must go to the Star Inn at Statham, match organiser John Dagnall (who I believe actually broke the pound barrier this week), and Cheshire Angling for sourcing the prizes. Nobody went home empty handed.

You may not have yet picked up on the fact that this week Jimmy Byrne won on three occasions and was runner up on the other. Now that is a real class act! Well done Jimmy.

27th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

27th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Veteran matchman George Barber blitzed the opposition in our Disabled and Over 60's match fished at Beech Road with 9-0-10 made up of three bream and twenty small roach taken on the pole and bread punch at 12metres. The next three weights although some 6lbs lighter weren't too far apart but Ronnie Durr took the runner-up spot with an all roach net for 2-13-0. Again there were lots of small roach caught which if they grow and survive is good for the canals future.

Our regular Mersey Series match was put on hold on Sunday whilst the annual Fur & Feather event was fished. In a river swollen with floodwater anglers struggled for a bite and were soon walking the bank. I really thought my luck was in when I caught one of the first fish, however as time went on rumours of others hooking a few were passed down the line and I resigned myself to the fact that at least I hadn't blanked, and also it was a nice day so what the hell.

With barely an hour to go the bream fairy weaved her magic as my tip went round in an unmistakable bite, now game on and wide awake. A bronze beauty soon lay in my net and after a quick hit with the nitro I was as right as rain. I eventually put my three fish on the scales for 7-7-12 trying to hide my smirk of satisfaction but was soon brought down to earth when Ross Wightman quipped, "That must be the daftest bream in the river."

However I was mindful of our Chairman, Chris Grehan's oft quote, "You are better being lucky than good." So, as pleased as punch I went home with sixty quid and the biggest piece of smoked gammon imaginable. Derek Bibby who but for the intervention of lady luck should have been the winner was runner-up with 2-9-12. Thanks must go to Cheshire Angling for sourcing and presenting the prizes and also match organiser Ross Wightman who was worried the night before that the river may have been unfishable.

Members should be especially vigilant at this quiet time of the year as we approach Christmas of poachers on our waters. A number of Polish anglers were evicted by a member this week from Rixton Claypits and another would be poacher from Moore Quarry. You can always help out the bailiffs by having a wander around your favourite water whenever you have a few minutes to spare. Don't forget poaching is a criminal offence under the Theft Act so you should always call the police on each occasion and note vehicle numbers.

20th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Chris Gaughan visited the River Dee at Worthenbury for the first time and was absolutely taken with the fishery. He ended his roving session with fifteen grayling, the best weighing 2lbs along with five brown trout to 1.5lbs. He also decisively lost a battle with a mystery large fish which doggedly refused to show itself easily snapping his 3lbs B.S. line. Method was stick float alternating between bronze maggot and caster. The track to this fishery is not too great but providing you don't own a boy racer and drive with care it is passable. We have discussed the possibility of a remedy but with the size of the tractors using it and the annual flooding anything short of a tarmac surface would not last five minutes.

Following last weeks stocking Grey Mist saw some action on Thursday Keith Barlow when landed another mirror of 20lbs which bailiffs identified as being a new fish that was introduced last year at 16lbs. His mate Mike Robinson had a fish of 15-4-0 and another of 13lbs. One more stocking at the end of 2013 and this fishery should be back to where it was before the old fish fell off the perch and with fish of known pedigrees. The tench fishing is definitely rates amongst the best in the North West but it is a pity about the cormorant predation that continues to decimate the roach population.

The Disabled and Over 60's match fished at Red Lane was one of two halves where all the weights came from the Houghs Bridge end whilst the rest struggled for ounces. Barry Owen had a nice net of roach for 4-5-4 taken on bread punch but runner-up Pete Critchley had to work hard for 4-1-10 made up of eighty to ninety tiny roach. I am informed that the flask search proved negative.

Paul Harding who won our Mersey Series match on Sunday included a bonus bream in his 5-8-5 net, whereas second placed Pete Critchley drew an end peg and put together an all roach catch of 4-5-2. The flow conditions were far from ideal and the river pushing through meant that extra lead was needed by those who opted for the feeder method.

A set of car keys has been found on our Sandiway small lake. Please contact me for details.

13th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

13th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Keith Barlow was over the moon with his catch of a 26-14-0 mirror carp from Grey Mist Mere on Friday. The icing on the cake was the fact that the fish was identified from our gallery as being stocked at 17lbs in 2010 which blows wide apart the pundits view that 'the tench eat all the grub' and 'they don't grow in the Mist'. Fishing with his mate Mike Robinson they shared a five fish catch and Mike lost two. Others weighed two at 14lbs and one 17lbs. Another member had four fish the same day so it looks like they have at last switched to feed up for winter.

This week we also stocked Grey Mist with thirty four VS Fisheries carp, mainly doubles with the best two at 19-12-0. We then went to Moore Quarry to introduce ten fish, all mid to upper doubles with the best two at 19-8-0 and 19-12-0. Sandiway small (17.5acre) lake was our next port of call where eighteen fish, all doubles were stocked with the best at 14-12-0. Then across the track at our 53acre fishery we introduced ten doubles with the best at 19-12-0. All the fish were absolutely stunning and mainly mirrors, but the star of the show was undoubtedly a fully scaled mirror that went into the large lake. Many thanks to the members who gave up their time to help, everything went like clockwork, an awesome team.

The River Wyre was stocked last week courtesy of the Environment Agency with 2000 chublets and I am informed that more roach and possibly rudd on the way. My contacts at St Michaels anglers also reckon that subject to health checks there may be even more fish in the near future. All good news.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match was really a matter of struggling for bites and saw weights plummet from those of the previous week. Veteran angler, Jimmy Byrne dug really deep to come up with a winning catch of 2-3-8. Third placed angler Lenny Dutton is worth a mention as he edged out Harold Gaskill into fourth with a daddy ruffe. I must admit in all my years I have never heard of one being caught on the Bridgewater. A flask check has been mooted for next week.

We are currently evaluating fisheries from where I do not receive catch any reports whatsoever which tends to indicate  members are not using a particular venue. We are looking this week at our stretch of the River Calder at Whalley. The simple question is do members visit, if so it is imperative that you get in touch.

6th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

6th November 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Worthington Lakes are producing some good bream catches Michael Veall had twenty nine last week between 2 and 4lbs. This week probably due to the influx of cold water into Arley he had some decent roach whilst his mate John Heaton had a few bream with the best weighed at 3-2-0. Our local bailiff team also report that Woodshaw reservoir is still worth a visit with fish still responding but I must warn you the wind there is absolutely freezing so wrap up warm and then put on an extra layer for good measure.

Sport at Grey Mist Mere is poor at present, however member Ian Robinson had three on his first visit with the best at 17lbs. whilst another angler had two including a mirror of 18lbs the rest I am afraid suffered the indignity of a blank. A few small jack-pike coming out to lures.

Our Warrington Local Winter League last Saturday on the Macclesfield Canal produced some decent weights. Steve Preece took the individual crown with 7-14-4 on mainly roach closely followed by Steve Clegg on 7-1-8 who included a few skimmers in his net. Quite a few decent perch on most sections helped to make up weights. Cheshire Gold took the team honours and is now leading the league on 35points followed by Saints on 30 but it is early days with seven matches to go.

Pete Critchley romped home in our Disabled and Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Stanny Lunt Bridge with 6-9-4 of bream, skimmers, and a few small perch seeing him over 3lbs spare over runner-up Trev Bainbridge on 3-9-0. The rest of the field struggled along with match organiser John Dagnall who did not even make 2oz. Still the banter and camaraderie on these matches makes it all worthwhile, or so I am told.

Please note that due to a combination of illness and holidays our office will remain closed on Friday evening 9th November, 2012.

30th October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

George's Fishing Tackle in Wigan has acted as our membership outlet for a good number of years however George and his wife Dorothy have decided to retire so they can see more of their grandchildren and hopefully find more time to actually go fishing. So on behalf of all our members I wish them both a long and happy retirement and thank them for all they have done for Warrington Anglers Association. From immediate effect Coppull Anglers will take over the reins as our local outlet. Their address is 144, Spendmore Lane, Coppull, Nr. Chorley PR7 5BX Tel. 01257 794040.

I have a report from Paul Edwards who had a really good session on the River Ribble at our Hurst Green stretch on the weekend before last. On arrival at the bankside the river level was up between 4 and 5feet but undeterred he set up his two ledger rods but needed a 5oz lead to hold bottom. Using Sonu Baits spicy sausage on one rod and Source boilies on the other plus groundbait and halibut pellet in the feeder he sat down expecting little in the way of action. I am certain that he didn't mind in the least to be proven wrong as his catch of seven barbel shows, weighing in order 9-2-0, 7-8-0, 3-3-0, 6-5-0, 12-9-0, 12-14-0, and 10-5-0.

The River Mersey looked in perfect condition for our Sunday Series event, however all that glitters is not gold and Jimmy Byrnes needed only 3-5-0 to take the win. After his amazing long run Ross Wightman for once was not in second place for as I said in my last weeks column 'I have a feeling his luck may change,' well it certainly did, but for the worst when his runner up spot was taken Anthony Higham with 1-13-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's event certainly saw an improvement on last week and for most again a lot of small fish were caught which looks promising for the future. Jeff Clare made certain of a win with a last minute slab taken on pellet to add to his net of roach for 6-5-4.  Runner-up Jimmy Byrne was less than an ounce behind with 6-4-8.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 23rd October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The ink was barely dry on new member, Peter Sheridan's membership but he soon opened up his account on our Wide Hole Fishery with a superbly conditioned pike of 14lbs.The fish was taken on mackerel fillet and had bite marks from an even larger specimen. He also reported that two other anglers also caught half a dozen fish between them. So it seems to be where the pike action is at the moment.

Ackers Pit is still really fishing well but the colour is starting to drop out of the water which may change things in a week or so, however at present carp, roach, rudd, and tench are feeding well. Fish are coming to a variety of baits but punch bread, caster, or pellet are producing the best results.

The Mount at Buckley is another place to visit for a confidence booster at this time of the year with members still reporting good all round sport. Two members from Abergele reckoned that amongst their catches of carp, roach, and bream, they had some specimen perch to around 2.5lbs. All taken on feeder fished maggot and hair rigged corn.

Steve Featherstone bucked the pole or tip trend when he won these weeks Mersey Series with 7-8-0 of roach on maggot fished bolognaise style. I cannot believe this but second place yet again went to match organiser Ross Wightman with 6-5-0. I think he has lost count about how many times he has been in the runner up place; he said "If I had 50lbs someone else would have 51." Watch this space I have a feeling his luck may change.

Our popular Disabled & Over 60's event saw weights down on last week but the numbers of fish caught increased as the area was alive with small roach and skimmers. This made it a close event with less than half a pound separating the top four. Winner Ronnie Durr had a lot of fish for 3-10-10.  There were a good number of weights between 2 and 3lbs.

I would remind members that dogs are not allowed on any of our fisheries. One member chose to flout this rule on our stretch of the River Wye over the weekend and compounded this by refusing to show the riparian owner his membership booklet (rule 5).

The funeral of Jack Bellis takes place at 2-30pm Thursday 25th October at Christchurch, Padate and then at Walton Crematorium.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 8-30pm every Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
