30th July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Committee member Ade Green had a busy session on the River Dee this week at Shocklach where he fished the stick-float using maggot and caster for net of roach, dace, and small chub, plus a couple of grayling and a trout for a weight of around 8.5lbs.

Mike Roberts reports having a cracking catch of over 20lbs of roach, rudd, perch, and skimmers on his first visit to the Weaver Navigation. He fished the pole at 6metres feeding groundbait and maggot with single on the hook for a bite every chuck. He fished behind the industrial estate near the rowing club and a revisit is definitely on the cards.

There are some good catches of roach being caught at Appleton Reservoir and most members seem to be catching the occasional carp, although I had a report of eleven by a pair of anglers in a night session. The swimmers were out last week so thanks to the members, particularly the two junior members who cleared up the mountain of rubbish that had been strewn about the banks. One of the youngsters was justly rewarded afterwards with a PB. Mirror of 20lbs.

Neil Plunkett was out this week on the Ribble at Hurst Green where he set his stall out for barbel on the feeder but to no avail with only a couple of roach to show for his efforts. However, a change to a stick-float and loose-feeding maggot saw his luck change catching a decent stamp of roach to 12oz.

Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner targeted Ackers Pit this week where they had a busy session with over a hundred small rudd, roach, and perch caught on waggler and maggot. No specimens but nevertheless they were both kept busy with a fish every cast.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Mersey Walk was won this week by Bob Campbell with a weight of 8-10-0 helped by a bonus 5lbs bream to which he added some skimmers all taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Derek Bibby was second fishing the same method with 6-12-0 of skimmers and roach.

The Tom James Open also fished at Mersey Walk was won by Jimmy Byrne with a net of 10lbs made up of a bonus 5lbs bream with the rest skimmers taken on a groundbait feeder and red maggot. On form Derek Bibby retained the runner-up spot again with a weight of 8-0-0 of skimmers, roach, and perch again on feeder tactics.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday saw another change of venue to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge but there was no change from the previous week of the first and second places. On form Rod Frazer was the winner with 9-1-2 drawing a peg by the marina and catching mainly roach plus a few skimmers on pole and caster. Jimmy Byrne was second with 8-7-12 of roach and perch. Seventeen anglers fished with an average catch of over 4.25lbs which saw increasing numbers of gudgeon turn up in catches.

23rd July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Anthony Rough fished my favourite stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury on Sunday. He chose a swim I know well where willows line the far bank. He fished a waggler float towards the trees loose-feeding hemp and maggots with double maggot on the hook and was into fish immediately having a bite nearly every run down the swim. He decided to stay in the same swim, rather than his usual 'roving the river' and ended his session with around 11lb of small chub, and dace and in such pleasant surroundings.

Neil Plunkett was let out for a couple of hours last week and nipped to Statham Pool as his nearest fishery.  He had two carp under 10lbs on a method feeder but then a cormorant appeared and understandably the swim went suddenly quiet. In desperation he legered a piece of meat on a long trace to try to tempt something and then had a take which he thought was a large carp until at the net he saw it was a large eel which was unhooked safely and returned.

I am jealous of Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner who seem to live a charmed life, fishing it seems most days. Today they braved the scorching temperatures at Woodshaw Reservoir where it was vital to set up a brolly to escape the sun's rays. Ken had roach, perch, and a skimmer with Dave having a similar catch plus a crucian, all taken on waggler and maggot.

Ian Shaw reports a busy session on Worthington Lakes where he reckoned that he had more than 35lbs of bream taken on feeder alternating between double white maggot and worm on the hook.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Mersey Walk was won this week by Jimmy Byrne who fished a groundbait feeder and red maggot for a weight of 22-13-0. His catch included four bream to 5lbs plus skimmers. Jim Gannon was second fishing the same method and his net included bream to 7lbs for a total of 21-6-0.

Our Sunday Mersey Series was this week fished on the Victoria Park stretch was won by Kevin Hall with 26-12-0 made up of five bream with the best at 5lbs plus skimmers taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Pete Howard took the runner-up spot again with 15-5-0 of bream and skimmers on the same method.

I would ask all anglers to please steer clear of the Mersey stretch from Howley Weir to the other side of Kingsway Bridge this weekend as the Rowing Club is running two major events on both Saturday and Sunday.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifOur Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday saw a change of venue to the River Mersey at Kingsway Allotments but for whatever reason results were uncharacteristically low with no bream showing up in catches. Rod Frazer was the winner with a net of small roach and perch for 2-7-0 taken on both feeder and pole tactics but with only an ounce separating him from second placed Jimmy Byrne it was a close-run thing. Needless to say, the twenty anglers taking part struggled for bites.

16th July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

16th July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Jonathan Green enjoyed a hectic five -hour pleasure session on Thursday fishing the River Mersey at Mersey Walk where he described the first hour as 'unreal with a fish every chuck' before things slowed down. He was catching skimmer bream with a decent slab of 5lbs, then continued picking up occasional skimmers and silver bream. He estimated his catch to be between 15 to 20lbs all taken on the tip and maggot.

Phil Brown fished at Appleton Reservoir on Tuesday using a waggler and corn or prawns on the hook to land a mix of chunky roach, tench, and perch, plus an 11-4-0 carp landed on 4lbs line and 14's hook. This fishery is definitely one where any method seems to produce results.

David Robinson fished Mowpin Pool at Wigan last week where he was hoping to catch a few tench and crucians but to no avail. Instead he caught loads of rudd, some a decent size on maggot and waggler. Just as the light started to fade, he hit into a fish which really put a bend in his rod and after an anxious few minutes a mirror of 9lbs lay in his landing net.

Martin Wheatley sent me a rare report on our Association owned Wide Hole Fishery which in reality is a pool which is both attached and runs in parallel to the Macclesfield Canal making it a sanctuary to the fish to escape the boat traffic. On Wednesday he fished an afternoon session arriving on the fishery at noon where he set up with a pole at 10 metres feeding corn with a single grain on the hook but it was an hour and a half before his first bite, a bream of 2lbs. He ended up with a dozen or so of the same stamp before packing up at 4-15pm.

Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner fished Statham Pool on Wednesday where Ken was using a pellet waggler as his main method of attack. The fish were not really feeding too well but nevertheless he had a dozen roach around the 6 to 8oz mark and would have had more but the pike were snatching at anything that moved. Dave had thirty roach to 12oz on pole and maggot plus an 8lbs mirror caught on a method feeder and pellet.  The dynamic duo were out again two days later, this time at High Legh where Ken fishing a waggler had over a hundred roach, rudd, and perch on maggot. Dave had the same numbers of fish, or as he describes it 'disgorger practice' plus seven small bream.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Kingsway allotments was won this week by Pete Jones who included a bonus 5lbs bream with the remainder being perch, all caught on feeder and maggot tactics for a weight of 6-1-0. Paul Bibby who took second place also included a bonus bream of around 3lbs to which he added almost 2.5lbs of roach and perch with taken on maggot alternating between the tip and pole for 5-7-0.

On Sunday the Briars Cup Open was fished on the River Mersey and was won by Derek Bibby with 26-10-0 made up of five bream, the best 5lbs and skimmers taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Pete Howard was the runner-up with 20-3-0 of bream and skimmers on the same method.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifOur Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook and saw Alan Brown adding to his win of last week at Woodshaw Reservoir. His weight was boosted by a bream in the 3 to 4lbs bracket to which he added roach and skimmers taken on the pole and pinkie for 6-8-0. George Hollis took second place from the adjacent peg with 5-12-12 fishing the same method but alternating between red maggot and pinkie.

9th July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Craig Stubbs and his mate fished Worthington Lakes for the first time on Sunday and didn't really know what to expect. They fished Arley and were not disappointed, Craig ending up with around 27lbs of bream, skimmers, hybrids, roach, and perch all taken on single red maggot and he lost four or five bigger bream. His mate had the best part of 20lbs and a re-visit is definitely on the cards. Other members have also been enjoying the bream bonanza on this water taking fish on mainly legered maggot or corn.

Anthony Rough spent a few hours on the River Wye this past weekend and although the chub were noticeable by their absence, he had good sport with dace who took a liking to his sweetcorn bait. Miles nearer to home Dave Saunders fly-fished the Alyn with some measure of success catching grayling and salmon parr, but as he mentioned a lot of the river is not fishable due to overhanging vegetation.

Stephen Gledhill set his stall out for carp at Rixton Claypits but despite the fishery looking 'carpy' all he caught over the two nights were bream. However, Paul Knowles was happy with his bream catch as he had some decent stamp fish until the blazing sun was too hot for comfort.

Alan and Angeline Oates had an enjoyable couple of hours fly fishing on the River Alyn starting at Cooks bridge. Despite a large willow being stuck under the bridge most of the stretch has been given a good clean out by the recent floods. They caught mainly small trout on small nymphs most of the day, in the afternoon they switched to dries and again small trout beating any other fish to the fly. The water level was fairly low but some good holes and runs are fishing well.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Kingsway allotments was won this week by Ray Boden who included three bream to 7lbs backed up by perch and chub caught on the pole alternating between maggot and worm for a weight of 21-3-0. Pete Jones took second place fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot to catch bream to 5lbs plus skimmers for 18-6-0.

Alan Faulkner with 16-10-0 was the winner of our Sunday Mersey Series fished at Victoria Park with a catch of bream and skimmers to 5lbs taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Jimmy Byrne took second place with a similar net of fish for 14-10-0 taken on the same method.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifOur Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished at our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery where I believe the anglers were served tea and 'hobnobs' before they started. Alan Brown was the winner with 16-6-0 of roach, crucians, and skimmers taken on the pole. Trevor Gray using his special homemade paste took second place with eight crucians for a weight of 13-6-0.

2nd July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

To confirm the rumour, one of our members has recently caught a fantastic 41-8-0 carp from Big Sandiway. There seems to be a reticence to report such specimen catches from both lakes on this Association owned asset; surely it is catches such as this that encourage new members to join WAA and ensure we retain existing ones. However, I expect there are always those that would simply like to keep the place to themselves.

Jim Gannon who does a lot of work on the Mersey to ensure that the pegs are kept in good repair and clear of undergrowth actually took a day off on Monday when he enjoyed a non-match session on peg 33. Fishing groundbait feeder and maggot was more than happy with his catch of eight quality bream. Gary Chadwick and his dad Ken also had a memorable session on the river when fishing groundbait feeder and red maggot they had bream of 6-5-0, 8-8-0, 10-1-0, and 10-6-0. Gary said that the larger fish would hardly fit in the net and he also lost four hefty specimens.

On Sunday I just fancied a session 'floater fishing' for carp and decided on High Legh Fisheries and as usual before setting up I check any anglers present; there was just one, Brian Machin and he had already caught eight carp using legered worm tipped with fake corn. There was nothing massive all from 2 to 8lbs. He then told the tale that his son had been asked to load his float gear but on arriving at the venue saw it was instead his carp tackle. Anyway, his son forgiven Brian added another carp to his tally before he left. As for me, well I fed the water hens as only one carp showed any interest.

Stuart Roberts took his first trip of the season to the Dee at Worthenbury on Friday when he reckoned it fished pretty poorly, just a few small dace on the tip and he couldn't buy a bite on the float. Whilst chatting to our bailiff Mike Lewis and just as he was bringing in another small dace the rod slammed over and they both assumed a pike had grabbed it but soon realised it was a large trout. It wasn't hooked it had the dace across its jaws just as pike do, next thing there's a big swirl and the dace has gone but justice, the trout was now hooked! It must have been a million to one the dace escaping and the trout ending up in the net.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Kingsway allotments was won this week by Pete Jones with four quality bream plus roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 15-10-0. River veteran Rod Frazer took second place with 10-13-0 made up of a single bream of 4lbs the rest skimmers and roach caught on both pole and caster and groundbait feeder and maggot.

Our Sid Jones Open held on Sunday at Mersey Walk saw march organiser Ray Boden take his first win of the season with a weight of 15-2-0 made up of skimmers and roach plus a bonus 3lbs bream all caught on pole and maggot. Kevin Hall took the runner-up spot with a similar mix of fish weighing 11-12-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road, Northwich saw Rod Frazer in winning form taking first place with 4-2-2 of roach and perch. Two pegs away Geoff Brooks took second place with a weight of 3-8-0.
