25th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Wayne Murphy had a productive 17hour Thursday overnight session on Small Sandiway last week ending up with six runs resulting in a brace of carp just over the 20lbs mark, a 9lbs tench, and to finish off a cracker of mirror weighing 27lbs on the nose, despite losing two fish.  After finding his mark he baited with krill boilies, hemp, and sweetcorn. He tipped his krill bait with a piece of fake corn and fed every couple of hours and after each fish.

Mike Christopher enjoyed a short after-work session on the River Ribble on Thursday to be rewarded with a cracking barbel around the 11lbs mark. He has done very well in his barbel quest over the past twelve months with the best to date a fish of 15lbs. He legered with Vortex CKO cocoon boilies on the hook.

Stuart Roberts finally got round to having a go at Appleton Reservoir last Friday after meaning to try it for ages. He started off on the tip but ended up on the waggler as once he got them feeding the tip was flying round before the feeder had even hit the bottom! He fished groundbait, caster, with hemp on the feeder and then loose caster and hemp on the waggler line, catching plenty of roach on both baits to well over a pound and a few perch to 1.5lbs.

Richard Pierce fished our stretch of the Wye last weekend where he reports the access to the river as being very overgrown. Nevertheless, he caught seven barbel between 4 and 6lbs, five chub to 3.5lbs, and load of dace.

Mick Clitheroe's trip to the Wyre last Saturday saw the river carrying a fair bit of extra water and chocolate brown coloured. He was fishing by 5am setting up with a feeder packed with a mixture of ground pellets and groundbait with a lump of luncheon meat on the hook. The first 3 casts produced chub of 2lb, 2lb12oz, and lastly one of 4lb 3oz then it went dead. He decided to try another swim but on arrival a rumble of thunder and spots of rain gave him second thoughts and he headed back to his car by which time the rain was biblical. Mick only fished for about two hours but as he said, "It was worth it. The river is a little cracker when you hit it right".

Andy Corr had a productive Sunday session on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery catching loads of roach, perch, and crucians. He fished the pole at 5metres feeding F1 green groundbait while loose-feeding corn and caster. The weather was unkind as Andy ended up drenched to the skin…so much so that our bailiff made him a brew in the cabin.  Anyone visiting this small fishery for the first time will no doubt agree with members comments that it is a credit to the volunteers that maintain it.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Agden where Al Faulkner drew the adjacent peg from where last month Paul Field was just short of breaking the longstanding 45lbs canal match record with 42lbs.  Well, Al worked his peg which produced a winning net of six bream plus two pounds of roach for a total weight of 23-1-0. He caught all the bream on worm. Alan Brown on the next peg was the runner-up with a bonus bream to add to his catch of roach for 7-6-0. Nineteen anglers fished.

Our Sid Jones Open Match took place on the Mersey last Sunday where Mike Dench clearly on a roll chalked up another win to add to his AT River Fest qualifier on the Trent the previous week.  Mike drew peg 21 where in a river running through with extra water from recent downpours, he fished the bolognaise with maggot and caster on the hook catching two decent sized bream, a hybrid, roach, and perch for a weight of 18-9-0. Jimmy Byrne took second place from peg 18 where he fished a groundbait feeder at 14metres with maggot and pinkie on the hook for a net of four bream and twenty plus roach and perch for 17-13-0.
