26th April 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Head Bailiff Jay Makin was out on the Mist again last week and continuing with his recent switch from tench to carp catches he snared another two mirrors, one of 21lbs and the biggest at 26lbs. Both caught on Mainline cell wafters tipped with corn inside a solid bag of 4mm oily pellets. Living in hopes of another repeat performance he was on the fishery again on Tuesday of this week for an overnight session and although he had so not caught at the time I rang him in the evening, he had helped weigh and photograph two carp for another angler. The first a mirror of 21lbs and unusually a 10lbs common. Certainly, we have never stocked fish that small for decades so any info would be more than welcome.

Thursday saw Will Lowndes enjoying a tench session at Phoenix Park Lake, landing four of them on maggot and waggler tactics. Will was pleasantly surprised as he thought that it might have been a bit early for them but they started to feed.

Phil Brown fished a waggler session on Appleton Reservoir on Friday using his 10ft two-piece float rod with corn and bread on the hook. It was slow at first and the ducks mugged his bait every time he fed. The answer was to put a few balls of ground bait out then wait for the the ducks to go away before casting his float over the baited area. The end result was a few quality roach but none of the better stamp fish. Needless to say, Phil enjoyed it all the same.

I am jealous of Phil because the following day he was out fishing yet again, this time targeting bream at Rixton Claypits. He legered a small Preston method feeder packed with Dynamite Baits krill method mix with equal amounts of micro pellets plus his own flavour mix. Phil ended up with ten bream during his morning session.

Andy Corr and his mate enjoyed a great session on Woodshaw Reservoir on Sunday with plenty of the crucians, plus bream and big roach. Our area bailiff team leader Trevor Gray who along with his dedicated team who between them keep this and our other fisheries in the area in tip top condition confirmed that the Association owned fishery is fishing well at the moment.

A short two-hour session on The Mount on Monday afternoon produced lots of roach and perch, plus half a dozen better quality perch for Anthony Rough. All were caught on the waggler, a couple of rod lengths out. Not confirmed but I reckon the bait was maggot.

Our popular Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall Trees and drawn at Jack's Bench. Stu Patterson was the winner helped by 3lbs bonus bream which added to his catch of roach gave him a weight of 3-11-0 all taken on bread punch.  Jimmy Byrne was relegated to second place this week but not too far behind with forty small roach, again all on bread for 3-6-0. Twenty-three anglers turned out.

Matty Finch and his son Koree 10years enjoyed a belting first trip to Grey Mist on Saturday night bagging three carp and one tench. Matty had his first fish within ten minutes of casting-in and ended up with two 17 pounders plus a quality tench of 4-7-0. Koree caught the biggest carp, a mirror of 22lbs. All fish fell for Mainline Cell boilies.

Garry Whitehead enjoyed his first bit of coarse fishing this year after the pike fishing finished with two hours on the Bridgewater Canal after tea with just some maggots. He had ten silvers which included a couple of skimmers and understandably can hardly wait to get back for another session.

Regular column contributors Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt aka The Dynamic Duo visited Statham Pool last week ending up with a five-hour session. Dave ended up with 16 roach plus a perch with the best around 12ozs and his mate with 9 roach. All fish were in excellent condition. Quite a number of pike were very visible cruising along the margins but with spawning their interest was elsewhere. Adding in their interest in the local birdlife it was all round an enjoyable day's fishing.

Scott Broadhurst fly-fished the Dee for trout over the Bank Holiday but despite ending up with none there was a real positive because finally after forty-five years he caught not one but two grayling. OK they were not large fish but they meant a lot to him and I hope that when the season opens, he will land more as the Dee has a great reputation for producing decent specimens of this hard fighting species.

Our popular Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery at Wigan. There definitely wasn't any sign of 'the white stuff' as it was an all-maggot affair with match organiser Jimmy Byrne comfortably leading the field with a winning weight of 13-10-0. He fished mainly the pole at 10metres with red maggot and had a cracking first two hours with almost a roach every put-in. A change to the tip saw him reeling in a skimmer bream with 10minutes to go but a hungry pike had other ideas. Nevertheless, he ended up with a decent net of roach including a few skimmers and a couple of small crucians.  Ray Boden was the runner-up fishing the same method with 8-2-0. Twenty-five anglers turned out.

Working Parties: - Sunday 24th March 9am start, Rixton Claypits peg improvements. Anyone who can spare a couple of hours to help are more than welcome.

Ian Brodie and his son Rowan 8 years enjoyed their very first visit to The Mount at Buckley on Monday for an overnight session. The excited youngster was made up with their first carp which came at teatime and was followed by two further carp during the night. All fell for a small Munch Bait boilie over a bed of pellet. Watch this space as I reckon that it won't be too long before Rowan is catching some decent specimens…..you have competition dad!

Our Head Bailiff Jay Makin was really over the moon with his Monday overnight session on Grey Mist this week notching up two species PB's with a carp of 26lbs and a tench weighing in at 10-3-0. After carp had been avoiding him all year his first one came at 6-50pm to which he added a three further carp of 22, 24, and 25lbs plus two tench to his total catch. He had been feeding one weed-free swim over the past few sessions in the hope that it would produce and bingo, it did with a vengeance. All fish were caught over a bed of Cell boilies and 4mm pellets with a single Cell dumbbell and a piece of fake corn on the hook.

Still on the Mist, Phil Brown was into the tench on Saturday when he caught three, so they are definitely on the feed. A repeat session on Tuesday 12th saw him land one and lose another. He caught on method feeder using Krill method mix with 50% micro-pellets.

Our popular Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal this week at Preston Brook. Again, it was mainly an all-roach affair, caught using bread punch with just the odd tiny perch on pinkie. Our accurate scales indicated a joint win with Neil Buist aka The Engine repeating his previous weeks success but having to share it on this occasion with match organiser Jimmy Byrne both putting identical roach catches on the scales to weigh 3-7-0. George Barbour more notably known as The Breadman who I checked practicing on this local length of the canal last week when he had caught a net-full of roach took third place with 3-4-0. Eighteen anglers turned out.

Working parties this past week saw our small but select group of volunteers out re-building and improving pegs at both Sandiway Large Lake and Phoenix Park Lake. On behalf of our members thanks guys. Don't forget any member who would like to become involved and help is more than welcome, simply turn up.

5th April 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The recent annual introduction in Grey Mist of the Dyofix colouring agent which helps to control excessive weed growth seems to have put a few anglers off this past week. Mist stalwart Philip Brown wasn't one of them and using a method feeder as he couldn't get a bite on float-fished corn he caught only one tench and commented, "But it is good just to be there!"

Jim Evans reports landing a pike weighing in at 16-4-0 from the Bridgewater Canal at Dunham on float-fished smelt, just the one but a PB. I was chatting to a member today (Tuesday) who was spinning small lures at Preston Brook. He had caught a few perch but nothing like the sizes of recent specimen reports.

Friday saw Jack Boswell enjoying a morning roach session on the Mount at Buckley where he caught fourteen of these chunky silvers, mainly around the 8 to 12oz mark on a groundbait feeder and double red maggot.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match on the Bridgewater Canal this week was fished at Walton with weights down from the previous week but at least everyone caught. It was an all-small roach event caught mainly on bread punch and probably due to the perch approaching spawning mode the latter were conspicuous by their absence.  Neil Buist aka The Engine clocked up his second win over the past three weeks with a weight of 1-14-0. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with 1-10-8. Fifteen anglers turned out.

Thanks to the herculean efforts of our Mersey volunteers more pegs have been sorted over the past seven days. Great work guys …. just under ten weeks to go the to glorious sixteenth!
