25th May 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th May 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Last Thursday Lukasz Procek one of our small band of dedicated volunteers managed to fit in a four-hour session on Phoenix Park Lake. He set-up a method feeder using 6mm spicy sausage pellet mixed with some groundbait, feeding little but often. His first fish was a 16-6-0 carp, followed by two tench around the 4lb mark. The last fish was what Lukasz described as 'a gigantic bream' which after being successfully landed managed to flip off the unhooking mat straight back into the water.

On Sunday Will Lowndes caught a PB perch of 2-8-0 from Phoenix which he caught using a Salmo Slider lure. He also had five pike to 7lbs in the same three-hour session.

The Froggy as locals call it or as newly listed in your membership book this year as Froggies Pool is attracting some interest. It is early days yet but on Saturday local angler Stuart Peters had a few hours to spare so went down the road for a quick session on this compact fishery. Nothing on his carp gear but had an enjoyable morning on the waggler and maggot with around forty small rudd and perch before finishing off with a lovely 13lbs common which gave him a decent scrap on light tackle.

On Sunday Corey Wilson targeted the Rixton Claypits carp but couldn't get past the bream. He still had a great day with three of the fish over the 4lbs mark and a nice tench.  Still on the bream, Andy Corr reports a couple of bronze beauties plus some silvers caught during his Sunday session on the Bridgewater Canal in Sale.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was held this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. It definitely wasn't one to write home about with torrential rain flooding the canal bank and bites hard to come by. The first three anglers had a bonus bream with Neil Buist aka 'The Engine' the winner with 4-2-0 which included a slab of around 3lbs plus roach taken on bread-punch. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was in second place, also with a bonus bream plus twenty small roach for a weight of 3-15-0, again all on bread. The only angler in the prize money without a bream was The Breadman himself, namely George Barber who took fourth place.

The work party scene last week was busy for our small but dedicated bands of volunteers who amongst other things during the week worked at trying to open up High Legh Fishery, still not there yet; Sandiway Lakes lots going on there with peg upgrades and fencing, and the renewing/repair of pegs on the Mersey in readiness for the opening up of the coarse fish season on 16th June. If you fancy helping please let me know or if on Facebook group join our volunteers group.

Members should note that all litter must be taken and disposed of at home and not piled in bins en route which has been happening at Sandiway Lakes where the bin adjacent to the entrance gate is overflowing with irresponsible anglers refuse.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with most days. 18th May 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett emailed me just after 2pm on Friday having just arrived home from what he described as 'a great session at Rixton'. He fished a method feeder and micro-pellets with either meat or corn wafters on the hook. Neil decided to call it a day when he'd netted his 16th bream but then a couple of members stopped to chat and another couple of fish came along. He ended up with eighteen bream for around 50-60 lbs of fish.  He commented, "All that, plus the nice scenery and the comic antics of the bird life, a great day at a lovely venue."

Andy Smith doesn't email often but having been a member for a few years now and mostly fishing at our Woodshaw Reservoir which he reckons is a remarkably well-looked after water, can't argue with that. But on Saturday he fished at Mowpin and had the place to himself and was more than happy to report that, 'you can catch as many rudd as you like before becoming bored.' Andy added a handful of decent perch, and new for him and totally making his day were three chub under a pound. His comment really touched me with, "Catching chub might be routine for some of you guys, but I can't tell you how happy I am to get one myself."

Andy Corr had a cracking session on our Association owned Wide Hole at Poynton on Sunday when fishing a quiver-tip and maggot he ended up with a net of twenty-four skimmers and bream for just over 40lbs. The fish were so tightly shoaled that his mate on the next peg struggled and only caught two fish.  Sometimes our sport can be so cruel!

New member Joe Grier in his second week since joining Warrington Anglers Association had a great evening session at Grey Mist when targeting the tench he was over the moon to land three crackers at 6-5-0, 6-7-0, and a new PB at 6-12-0, all took red maggot popped-up on a heli-rig. He was back again on Monday evening after these green red-eyed monsters (his words, not mine) when he caught two tench and even managed to nudge his PB up an ounce with one of 12-13-0.

In a three-hour session on Monday evening Garry Whitehead had a good net of roach from Appleton Reservoir. He fished a 4gm float with 1.5lb BS hook-length accompanied by a pint of maggots. Simple fishing on a pleasant sunny evening.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was held this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane. Bread is the elixir of life, well it is according to The Breadman, namely George Barber who it is said by some to be too 'careful' to buy maggots, but that aside he clocked up another clear win this week on the white-stuff. Drawn by the wood he fished pole and bread punch accompanied by his secret liquidised feed preparation which resulted in a net of roach for a weight of 5-10-0. George Hollis took the runner-up spot from the adjacent peg which was helped by a bonus bream caught early doors plus roach for 4-2-0 taken alternating between bread and maggot. Nineteen anglers turned out.

Despite trying our best by altering our AGM from the usual date in March to May the Covid-19 restrictions unfortunately do not allow it to take place.

11th May 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th May 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Report of the week must go to veteran member Keith Wernham who due to celebrate his seventieth birthday this year showed his skills in how to play a carp on 4lbs mainline, a 2lbs hook-length, and size 18's hook. He was enjoying his session at Appleton Reservoir on Thursday fishing a waggler in 6ft of water and happily catching roach. He was feeding caster with red maggot on the hook when the float shot under and he struck into what was obviously not a roach. Thankfully a passing member who had stopped to watch dug his carp landing net out of his car as it was obvious Keith's small spoon net was not going to be up to the job. After about an hour and a half of playing the fish the 2lbs hook-length finally gave up the ghost and snapped just as what was a 20lbs quality carp slid safely into the net.

The small lake at Sandiway, (not that small at 17.5acres) has been producing a few decent carp lately although sport is generally slow as it is on most fisheries at this time of the year. There have been rumours of a big fish but to date nothing confirmed, although with our stocking policy of quality VS fish I wouldn't at all be surprised.

Phil Brown reports catching a 22lbs common carp from Grey Mist on Monday morning which fell for a fake pellet over a small bed of pellets. It was the third he had recently caught which included a 19-10-0 mirror and another common of 22-8-0. As usual, thanks Phil for sharing your catch reports.

Dave Grimshaw fished Wide Hole at Poynton on Thursday and despite the muddy conditions and trek from the car park he had an enjoyable three-hour session with a dozen roach, two bream, and a lone tench around 2lbs. Dave fished a small groundbait feeder and alternated between pinkie and double maggot.

Mike Pritchard had Statham Pool to himself on Saturday where he fished his usual waggler method using maggot or pinkie on the hook which resulted in a single roach followed by a others but sport was slow. He hooked and lost what he reckoned was a bream and decided to change to caster which despite waiting longer for bites brought a bigger stamp of fish. He hooked a carp which exploded to the surface before immediately bidding farewell. He ended up with around thirty fish, roach, skimmers, hybrids, and a single dace which now seem resident in the feeder stream.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was held this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. Organiser Jimmy Byrne was given a nose-bleed from the next peg by Mike Worley who won in what turned out to be a low weight event with 2-1-0 made up of five roach, a gudgeon, and a bonus bream. The runner-up spot went to veteran matchman Rod Frazer who stuck with a pole and caster approach fished tight against the far bank to end up with twelve roach and just an ounce short of the winner with 2-0-0. Twenty-one anglers turned out.

4th May 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tony Siddall ignored the weather forecasts on May Day Bank Holiday for an unexpected enjoyable three hours fishing at Phoenix Park Lake. Fishing a small groundbait feeder and single red maggot he was taken by surprise by his first fish, a tench he reckoned was around 2.5lbs. It turned out to be the only one he caught as it was followed by twenty or so roach and three perch.

Michael Lawton enjoyed a memorable day session at Rixton Claypits on Thursday when he caught his first ever tench weighing exactly 7lbs. The specimen fell to feeder fished single corn.

On Sunday morning Bob Trueman fished the small River Banwy at Cyfronydd and reports catching three grayling around 10inches plus a 12 inch brown trout. Now discovered I am sure that he will soon be back for further sessions on this Association owned 600yds of double bank fishing upstream of the A458 bridge which I would think rarely sees an angler. Fill your boots Bob.

Thanks to a member ringing me promptly on Sunday morning reporting a torrent of water flooding from the fields into the Bridgewater Canal just up from the Tramps Grave towards Moorefields Bridge. It turned out to be a burst water main on the A56 making the canal chocolate coloured as it washed soil and hopefully no contaminants from the fields.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's event was held on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery at Wigan in unseasonal cold and windy conditions, so windy in fact that loose-feeding was not an option. Ron Durr although the last to arrive for the draw pulled out peg 2 and made it pay with a winning net made up of a crucian, skimmers, roach, and perch for a weight of 5-9-0 caught using pole and red maggot. Only ounces separated the following weights but match organiser Jimmy Byrne 'ounced out' local rod Joe Garry to take second place with an all skimmer catch for 3-15-0. Unusually only three crucians were caught throughout the match where fifteen anglers turned out with some obviously put-off by the weather.
