28th February 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Jim Tate reports enjoying a three-hour winter session catching some of the newly introduced roach at Ackers Pit. He fished pole and maggot at 11metres to land a dozen chunky specimens. John Ponting also managed a few hours on the fishery and setting up a waggler caught a nice roach on his first cast followed by three more within the next 10minutes… then they simply disappeared, but that's fishing.
Keith Ellis reports catching a brace of perch, both around 1.5lbs from the Grantham's Bridge stretch of the Bridgewater Canal fishing a fat minnow sinking lure and was gutted when just before packing-up lost a double figure carp at the net, yes carp! They do eat other fish.
Our Members Mersey Series on Sunday was cancelled this week due to further damage to the temporary fix on the Howley Weir that caused unsafe low river levels. Likewise, the Warrington Rowing Club were forced to cancel their events at the weekend. I understand that a permanent fix is due this March, but it is not looking too promising to save the remaining matches before the onset of the close-season but nevertheless levels will be assessed on Friday.
The Disabled & Over 60's match this week saw a change of venue to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road. The good news is that everybody caught but the results were the lowest weights that I have seen for some time. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne fished a tiny bread punch and pinkie to catch fifteen tiny roach, perch, and gudgeon[fl1] for a weight of 0-8-3. Roy Rogers took second place with a similar catch for 0-7-10. Seventeen Anglers fished.
Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their membership book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT where mail is collected and dealt with most days. Alternatively, you can post to Warrington Anglers Association PO. Box 71, Warrington WA1 1LR where mail is collected weekly.
Come on folks, please get in touch as your catch reports are especially welcome at this time of the year as sport slows and not as many of you on the banks. Lots of members rely on your shared information for their angling visits. Email secretary@warrington-anglers.org.uk
