21st February 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st February 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Steve Daly enjoyed his session at Grey Mist last week where he was quite happy catching roach on a waggler set-up with 2lb line, a 20's hook, and maggot. That was until other fish muscled in, the first a pike which took one of his roach just as Ste struck into a bite, in doing so he managed to hook it in the scissors, followed by two tench of 6-10-0 and 6-15-0 … and the final test, another pike. There were some anxious moments but all safely landed.

Malcolm Fairbank was enjoying his day casting a fly on the Dane last week where he reported catching four nice grayling despite losing a few. He had quite a few takes on a gold head red tag wet fly including an out of season trout. Scott Bridgen likewise enjoyed his brief two-hour session fishing the Alyn for the first time when he caught a brace of grayling and three small trout from this small but popular river.

I called at Ackers Pit last Thursday to surprise the Dynamic duo Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt who were there in search of the roach that were recently stocked. They both caught, Dave with three quality silvers to a massive 1-12-0 with Ken also on three roach between 8oz and 12oz all caught on float-fished maggot. No golf for this pair😊

James Shimmon had a nice day on the Mount catching three carp, the biggest a beautiful common of 14lbs. Ian Rhodes also has a liking for the Mount but targeted the quality roach that this water holds reporting catching fifteen fish to 1.5lbs using a small groundbait feeder and white maggot.

Column contributor Steve Brookes won the Northwich AA winter teams open on the Weaver last Saturday, OK not a WAA water, but of real interest is that using his old faithful swing-tip rod with 4lbs mainline, 0.13mm hook-length, a 16's hook baited with a single white maggot he only went and caught a specimen mirror carp of 27-9-0 to add to his catch of roach. Well done Steve.

Our Members Mersey Series on Sunday was fished this week on the Mersey Walk stretch and with the fish in a feeding mood saw the previous weeks weights absolutely eclipsed. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne did the double with another win for a cracking winter weight of 18-6-0 from peg 59. He started off on the feeder and bread but with fifteen roach in the net the bites became finicky and hard to hit so he swapped to his previously fed pole line with red and white maggot where he caught a roach on the first cast ending up with forty roach and half a dozen perch. Eddie Frangleton took second place from the adjacent peg 58 where fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot just past mid-river he put a catch of mainly roach plus a few bonus skimmers on the scales for 11-5-0. Sixteen anglers fished.

The Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton and saw no change in the winner or runner-up from the previous week. Stu Patterson pegged opposite the rhododendrons clocked up another win putting together a net of roach plus a skimmer for a weight of 7-14-0. George Barber aka The Breadman secured his second place with an all roach catch (no clues for the bait used) for 6-12-0. Sixteen Anglers fished.
