24th April 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is with sadness that I report the death of well known Warrington Anglers member Bill Worrall whom many of you will have met at either Cicily Mill Pool or Grey Mist Mere. I have known Bill for many years and he seems to have always been on the fishing and shooting scene for as long as I can remember. He will be missed and our sympathy goes to his family at this sad time. I understand the arrangements are 12noon 28th April at Walton Crematorium.

Rixton Claypits are producing good catches of roach and skimmers on maggot to both pole and waggler tactics. A few tench are also starting to show but the best catch this week was by Andrew Walmsley who endured a night of torrential rain to be rewarded at 1-15am with a cracking mirror carp of 19lbs. The fish took fifteen minutes to come to the net and fell to a Rod Hutchinson boilie.

Tench sport at Grey Mist gets better by the day as Paul Floyd reports yet another good session on this popular urban fishery. He fished corn on one rod but it was his hair rigged double 8mm pellet on the other that saw all the action. He had half a dozen tench with the best at 6-13-0 plus one of the original carp at 14-14-0 and one of the new mirrors at 17-5-0. This latter fish went off  like a rocket and size for size Paul reckons it was one of the best scraps he'd had in twenty years on his trusty 1.75lbs test curve rod. Michael Simpson also got amongst the tench with fish to 4lbs.

Our weekly Disabled & Over 60's match chased the fish, or at least that was the general idea when they fished the event on Monday at Hilltop where we released a thousand or so roach a few weeks previous. However things didn't go quite according to plan because Derek Bibby found only big bream in his swim for a 10-9-8 winning net closely followed by Jimmy Byrne, again all bream for 9-13-0. The next few weights were also decent sized bream coupled with reports of large fish lost at the net. The roach, well your guess is as good as mine but with over 20 miles of canal they can roam at will. Pole fished caster and bread accounted for most catches.

Warrington AA juniors entered the first round of the Cheshire Spring League on Sunday. The match was hosted by Northwich Anglers on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Rudheath.

Our lads had a good match, and finished 2nd on the day, only a point adrift of Northwich. Ryan Brown was the top WAA performer, weighing 3lb 4oz of roach and skimmers, good enough for a section win and 2nd Individual top weight. The match was won by Tom Bunby (Northwich) with 3lb 8oz.

Good luck to the team for the next round which is on our home water, the Bridgewater Canal, on Sunday at Preston Brook. Full results at http://cheshireadg.blogspot.co.uk/p/match-results.html

Lucy Anderson is an ecology PhD student at the University of Leeds and is investigating the impacts of aquatic invasive species in the UK. She is seeking your help to try and get a better understanding of current fishing practices so we can identify possible ways to prevent their spread. The questionnaire takes 5 - 10 minutes to complete and all answers are completely anonymous. Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 voucher for AnglingDirect online tackle shop.
