Committee member Mike Worley has been having some cracking evenings sport this past week on the Bridgewater Canal using a five metre whip fishing just over the shelf. On Wednesday evening he fished maggot and had a roach or a perch every cast plus a bonus bream of over 4lbs. The following evening he used pellet to take a succession of quality roach and decent bream. On seeing his photographs I was impressed with the size and quality of the fish. The population explosion of small skimmers this year looks good for the future.
Steve Daley and his girlfriend Jenny shared a seven fish catch of pike from Grey Mist Mere on Monday using Cotton Cordell bass lures. They had four from the car park end and then walked around the fishery before taking a further three fish from the same place. Ok, the fish were not monsters with the biggest just over 8lbs, but nevertheless it's not half bad considering they were on a flying visit and only fished for an hour and three quarters!
I was talking to an angler on Friday last who has had some phenomenal carp success on the Bridgewater Canal. No technical set-ups or secret recipe boilies, just simple floating dog biscuits which have taken fish to 21-8-0. And to further dispel the myth that 'all the carp have died' he has had as many as three and four fish on a short session with the majority of fish upper singles to lower doubles.
The Mersey turned out some good weights for the Bank Holiday weekend matches with Sunday's event being won by Lenny Dutton with a 9-2-8 mixed bag of roach, perch, and dace taken on pole fished maggot and hemp followed by Ray Bowden who fished a similar method. But to confound the critics Ste Featherstone who fished the feeder was third with 8-11-14 and only a fish or two from a win. The Monday match suffered from a poor attendance but thanks to organiser Bob Campbell on behalf of those who did fish for running the event. However the sun shines on the righteous as Bob finished in second place.
Due to the unacceptable amounts of litter at Grey Mist Mere bailiff Steve Kemble has organised a working party for this Sunday morning (4th September) to clean-up the mess, branch trimming, and general maintenance work to improve your fishing. We rely on member volunteers for these jobs, so if you can spare a few hours to help please meet on the car park at 9am onwards. Thanks in anticipation.
