23rd August, 2011 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

23rd August 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Paul Floyd reports fishing our stretch of the Wye last week accompanied by his son Andrew and despite low summer levels they still managed seven barbel to 6.5lbs and chub to 3-9-0. After trying a variety of baits they settled on 15mm halibut boilies and crushed halibut and hemp groundbait in a feeder.

The Mersey is still providing pleasure and match anglers with good catches of roach, dace, and perch, plus the occasional bream to 4lbs. Sundays match was won by Ray Boden with 9-10-8. Most anglers are doing the damage with pole tactics and occasionally the waggler but for some reason the previous success of the feeder method is just not happening. Maggot and loose fed hemp are bringing best results.

Hearing that some decent roach catches were on the cards at Moore Quarry I decided to pay the fishery a visit late on Sunday afternoon. The intention was fish both a groundbait feeder and the pole just over the shelf. However after half a dozen casts the roach homed in and were just queuing up for my double maggot offering. In fact my feeder rarely hit bottom before I had a nice palm sized fish every cast. Sport was so hectic that the pole just did not come into play save for a couple of fish at the outset. Like the Mist the carp action is slow but fish are still being caught, best I heard on my visit was an angler who had two from the car park swim but lost two in the pads.

The carp action is very quiet at Grey Mist Mere but there is plenty of action with roach, perch, and tench. Some members still seem to find it a struggle to take their empty bagged up rubbish home but find the strength and are considerate enough to hang the bags out of reach of rodents in the surrounding trees. If those responsible are reading this take note that when caught they will be banned from our club and under a new initiate from all other participating clubs in the North West.

Halton Housing Trust, Sure Start, and ourselves teamed up to hold a successful day last Thursday at Phoenix Park Lake where over 100 youngsters and their parents enjoyed angling taster sessions with many catching their memorable first fish, whilst the very young ones tried out the new pond dipping platform.  Many thanks to Mo, Jane, and our coaches.

The very best of luck to members Dean Barlow, Helen Dagnall, Wendy Locker, and Dave Brooks who will be representing England next weekend at their respective world championship events. Dean in the new feeder champs, and Helen, Wendy, and Dave (team manager) in the ladies champs.
