4 Jan 2011. WAA Weekly Report

Good news for 2011 for all you devotees of Woodshaw Reservoir, the extremely popular Warrington Anglers owned fishery in Wigan, is that at long last the deeply rutted and pot-holed approach lane is going to be resurfaced.  This has come about through the outstanding efforts of our local fishery team who successfully approached Wigan Metro for a £500 grant towards the necessary work. This fishery produces outstanding catches of crucians, tench, bream, roach, and rudd.
Ten anglers braved the cold conditions to fish our regular Sunday match fixture on the River Mersey; the only problem was that with the exception of Dave Howard who had a 6lbs pike nobody else had a bite. Despite playing and landing the pike on light match tackle unfortunately they do not count in this series so it resulted in the inevitable draw for the prizes. As luck would have it some semblance of justice prevailed and Dave was first out of the draw bag.
Ron Williams our bailiff on the River Dane reports that last Wednesday was the first time that he has ever seen the river totally covered in ice. Despite this it did not deter about eighteen anglers from fishing the river on Saturday which by this time had thawed. Two or three grayling seemed the average taken mainly on red maggot.
It seems that in the freeze-up cormorants are now even attacking the smaller rivers in the search for food.  A member reported last week that one came up in his swim on the tiny river Perry, because of this where normally he catches half a dozen or so plump grayling he only managed a single fish.
Thankfully the Angling Trust has now taken action and written to Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon MP asking him to cut the red tape that is involved in applying for a licence to protect fisheries from these birds.
Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 8.30pm on Friday, for 2011 night permits and new memberships. The latter can still also be purchased from Baileys Tackle, Cheshire Angling, and Challinors Sports in Warrington or at our other depots as listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk.
