11 Jan 2011. WAA Weekly Report

Following the longest period of waters being covered with a thick layer of ice it is a pleasant change to report some good news from the Trent & Mersey Canal where our Warrington Local Winter League was fished last Sunday. The individual results saw match regular Bob Clough put 14-13-8 of plump roach on the scales for an impressive win and over 4lbs clear of runner up Rick Taylor on 10-2-10.
Bob was pegged near the road bridge and started by feeding liquidised bread but eventually after a few fish on punch he swapped to caster and caught fish steadily. Rick stuck to bread and had an all skimmer bream catch as did third placed Graham Stokes on 10-1-8.
New member Paul Davies only joined Warrington Anglers for our impressive variety of river fisheries and on his first visit to our stretch of the Ribble was not to be disappointed. With ice in the margins he had three chub, two of which he weighed at 5-2-0 and 5-4-0 plus three grayling to over 1.5lbs having lost four big fish at the net when they shed the hook. The successful method was legered bronze maggot using a partially taped up maggot feeder to just trickle out a few occasional offerings and at the business end a 20's hook tied to 1.5lbs hook length.
Nothing much is happening on the River Mersey but a few roach are being caught on the Bridgewater Canal from Hough's Bridge area to punch bread.
As a result of a £500 Brighter Boroughs Grant from Wigan Metro the roadway leading up to Woodshaw Reservoir has now been re-surfaced. No more broken exhaust pipes! The bad news is that all the Wigan fisheries are still covered in a layer of ice and are unfishable.
Good news for members is that the barrier is now in place effectively closing off the centre track at Sandiway Lakes, save for those who like our members have legitimate access. Thanks to local residents and both the Parish and County Councils for making this possible.
Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 8.30pm on Friday, for 2011 night permits and new memberships. The latter can still also be purchased from Baileys Tackle, Cheshire Angling, and Challinors Sports in Warrington or at our other depots as listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk.
