25th January 2011. WAA Weekly Report

 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
What a difference a frost or two makes to the match scene as weights plummeted from the previous week. On Sunday the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton produced the better results with Gary Mannion taking top spot in the spring league with 4-8-0 of roach followed by Bob Campbell on 3-8-0. Alan Brown needed only 2-0-0 on the Bridgewater to secure a win in our local Disabled & Over 60's match and most anglers really struggled for a bite.
This wasn't the case for Steve Daley who after seeing vast shoals of small fish leaping out of the water at Lymm in their efforts to evade marauding pike decided it was time to dust off the predator gear which hadn't seen any action since October. His session on Thursday produced seven pike with the best three weighing in at 15-4-0, 13-3-0, and 12-12-0. He fished a simple float rig alternating between sardine and smelt.
Sport on the River Mersey is poor and the Dee is just starting to return to its winter form with catches of dace and roach reported. The Dane at Holmes Chapel really needs some fresh water as it is really low at present however members are catching a few grayling and chub on maggot or bread.
In an effort to control the heavy algal infestation that has plagued Ackers Pit we are stocking some small carp on Friday. The original idea was to leave carp out of the equation but the alternative of chemical control is really not an option. The high number of ducks does not help the poor water quality problem it being enriched further by their droppings.
Work continues on Sunday at both Grey Mist Mere (pegs and pathways) and at Ackers Pit (habitat improvement). If you fancy helping at either please give me a ring or drop me an email.
Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 8.30pm on Friday, for 2011 night permits and new memberships. The latter can still also be purchased from Baileys Tackle, Cheshire Angling, and Challinors Sports in Warrington or at our other depots as listed on our website, or online at www.warrington-anglers.org.uk.
