I make no apology that Cicily Mill Pool is in the news again this week and deservedly so because on Thursday member Jeff Mowbray banked the 'Cicily Common'. After the hard winter it had lost a bit of weight but still came in at an impressive 30-12-0 and is his personal best. There is a story behind this which goes back to February when Jeff submitted a 17lbs common from this same fishery for our 'Catch of the Month' and he was awarded a consolation prize of a Korda carp care kit with my comment, Hope you catch the big thirty in which case I'd give you the top prize myself! Well me and my big mouth!

 

Another good capture this past week as the fish start to feed is that of new member Peter Tickle who with the ink still wet on his card fished one of our waters for the first time. What an introduction to Grey Mist Mere as his home made boilies tempted a cracking mirror weighing in at 28-8-0. Paul Moran set his stall out on the venue to target the tench population by fishing a small feeder and imitation casters. As I checked his membership I thought he was taking the Mickey, but that second bang on cue out came a tench 'wearing' the imitation casters in its top lip. How's that for a coincidence.

 

New member Christopher Chadwick had a surprise capture from Moore Quarry in the shape of a beautifully marked pike which weighed in at 18lbs. What made it unusual was that he was ledgering at the time with boilie intended for the resident carp.

 

At Woodshaw Reservoir small roach and chub are still feeding plus a few cruciens. Last week a member caught what was obviously a golden orfe about 2lbs in weight which is rather worrying as we definitely have not stocked any such fish. Having spent a lot of member's money on new fish for this popular venue any unauthorized introductions can expose the whole stock to disease. A similar thing happened at Ackers Pit when the whole objective of stocking true health certified crucian carp was ruined by some idiot releasing goldfish from a garden pond. If any such fish are caught anglers should retain them and contact me immediately and I will arrange for disposal.

 

Charlie Farrell and two of his mates fished the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton Wharf and had a good days fishing despite the very high windy conditions. They each had between 6 to 8lbs of roach and reckoned that they would have easily made double figures in more stable conditions.

 

Members visiting Rixton Clay Pits cannot fail to be impressed by the work carried out to pegs and pathways by our volunteers on this popular fishery. Colin Wood was no exception but he was equally taken with the sport he enjoyed on Sunday when he had a good mixed bag of perch, skimmers, roach, four tench ranging between 2 and 4lbs, and lovely crucian around the3lbs mark.
