2nd September 2008 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The committee chose the winners of our Fish of the Month competition at out Monday monthly meeting, and I can tell you it was a close run thing such was the quality and number of entrants.

Eventually a consensus was reached and the junior prize was taken by Calum Barlow with a 6-10-0 tench from Grey Mist Mere and Alex Kinsella won the senior prize with his first ever barbel from the River Ribble at Hurst Green which weighed in at 10-12-0. Calum wins £50 of Bait Tech products and a Korda carp care kit and Alex £100 worth plus the carp care kit. It certainly is a lot of bait and well worth winning so keep those entries coming in to have a chance of winning the September prize.

Last week Dave Jones had one of the best chub catches that I have heard of from the River Dane with seventeen fish. They were like peas in a pod around 4lbs but three witnessed by our local bailiff Ron Williams sent the scales round to 5lbs. Dave used a maggot feeder with double caster on the hook. Ron reports that most members are catching chub and odd grayling.

The Mersey is currently fishing well despite the fluctuation in levels which is currently being investigated. Neil Buist who won Sundays match with just an ounce short of 10lbs used the pole at an easy 8 metres to catch roach and perch steadily. Runner up Martin Lenihan used the same method but included skimmers in his catch of 8-9-0.

Mark Graham just caught the River Wye in good form on Monday catching five barbel, the best 8-6-0 and six chub around 3.5lbs and lost several larger fish in a snag. Legered halibut pellet was the successful method.

The middle lake on the Worthington complex at Wigan is producing some cracking roach and bream sport to both pole and quiver tip methods. Clive Handley reports a good roach catch of over thirty roach taken on the pole using corn and caster. More info needed on the other two lakes please.

On behalf of all our members may I wish the best of luck to our senior national team who are competing in the NFA 1st Division National Championships on Saturday. The venue this year is the River Huntspill and Kind Sedgemoor Drain.
