16th September 2008 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column

The River Mersey is fishing well with the regular match this week being won by match organizer Bob Campbell from peg 61. He fished a groundbait feeder and maggot to take a mixed net of roach, bream, and perch for 8-5-4, closely followed by Jeff Shaw on a level 8lbs.

This past week we continued to play our part in the European survey for PCB's ingested by fish by supplying the German laboratory with fifteen bream from the Mersey. The interesting comment by the fishery scientists was the decent growth rates of the fish. Equally good news from EA Flood Defense is that they have agreed to stock more fish due to the inconvenience our members faced during the installation of the new monitoring system.

Although it is one of our association owned fisheries Wide Hole at Poynton is not exactly a water under pressure despite it being stuffed full of bream, roach, and carp, plus it offers some good sport with pike in the winter. One of our members had a walk along the bankside this past week and reports that there were fish rolling and topping everywhere. Reports please.

I managed to escape for a couple of hours on Sunday to my favourite spot on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. As the ducks and swans get fed with bread at this spot on a regular basis
the obvious choice of bait choice was Warburtons medium sliced. After a few minutes following the introduction of one pot of liquidised bread I was soon into a succession of roach and skimmer bream plus the occasional gudgeon. In a match the same peg just does not produce and as I am more lucky than good I can only assume it is due too disturbance from the numbers of anglers on the bank.

We have just received notification from Manchester Ship Canal Company that our bid has been successful for the Edge Lane to Marsland Road stretch of the Bridgewater Canal. This now consolidates our other holdings on this canal and will have a positive effect on our stocking policy. The fishery will not be open to members immediately, more details to follow.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street will be open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9-30pm for subscriptions, new members, etc.
