30th Sept. Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

The annual River Mersey Championships was fished on Sunday. Gary Mannion put together an impressive net of roach and skimmers on the pole for a winning weight of 10-14-1. Next best weight was Jimmy Byrne with 5-11-0 taken on the pole and tip. The river seems a little out of sorts at the moment, as fish shoal up with the temperatures dropping. Should be good this weekend if you are lucky enough to land on the fish though.

I have been busy over the summer collating photos of our waters to display on the new website. On my travels I have been able to visit some of our least-fished waters. Over the weekend, I made the short trip to the Macclesfield Canal at Astbury. It is an interesting section of canal, and although the lack of ample parking prevents it from being a good match length, there is plenty to tempt the pleasure angler. Speaking to some of our local members, there are good shoals of bream and roach along the stretch. Interestingly though, some quality perch and ghost carp have been caught lately alongside the near bank rushes.

There are still a few waters that I am short of photos for, in particular our waters on the River Dee. If any members have any photographs that they would be prepared to share, I would be most grateful to hear from you. Emails to waasite@gmail.com

I managed to get a few hours away at the weekend and headed for the River Dane. All I took was a quivertip rod, a centrepin reel loaded with 5lb line, and a loaf of bread. Low water and clear sunny conditions made for quite difficult fishing, but after exploring just about every deep hole on the stretch, I ended up with 6 nice chub between 8ozs and 4lbs, all caught on ledgered crust. Members Chris Capper and Nick Grasby also tackled the Dane, and as well as managing a few nice chub between them, Nick also caught a surprise 2lb+ brown trout in perfect condition. The surprise was that he caught the fish on luncheon meat.

Around the stillwaters, fishing seems to be steady. I am told that the bream and tench have been feeding at Sandiway, with the latter putting in appearances in the week at around 6lbs. With Autumn now unflolding nicely, I would expect fish to have a decent feed before the temperatures really drop.

HQ at Parker Street will be open on Friday evening as usual for new members, subscriptions or a chat. Catch reports to the usual address please. Tel 01928 726238, email: frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk
