4th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Tony Baron reports braving as he describes 'The Ho Chi Minh' trail to fish the River Dee at Worthenbury…I must admit that it is a rather rough bumpy track but well worth the trip. Although he wasn't expecting too much at first sight of the river, he had a small chub on his first cast followed by quality dace every 'chuck' for the first three hours interspersed with small chub to around 12oz. Sport eased off for an hour around midday but then came back on for their last hour. His mate also enjoyed his day with chub to 1.5lbs plus dace and a grayling around the pound mark. Tony commented, "Excellent days fishing on a beautiful stretch of river."
After witnessing the horrors of the Mersey fish deaths on the 14th June Jason Best definitely needed a pick-me-up and his visit to the Weaver Navigation over the weekend certainly helped. He fished the pole between 5 and 6metres to catch a cracking net of bream, skimmers, roach, and perch. Maggot and groundbait is the favoured method.
After being reunited with his favourite hat that he lost on his previous visit to Rixton Claypits thanks to a fellow angler Scott Broadhurst was back again on Monday. Despite being soaked to the skin with the heavy persistent rain it didn't deter him and he ended up with catch of seventeen bream.
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal in the Agden Bridge length in heavy rain and blustery winds. The winner, George Hollis drew in Agden Boats and with the conditions as they were decided to fish just the top four section of his pole using maggot and pinkie. Well, it worked and he included a bonus bream of a couple of pounds along with roach and perch for a weight of 5-3-0. Rod Fraser was the runner-up with 4-14-0 with a net of roach to 12oz and a decent hybrid, all caught on caster. Fourteen anglers fished.
Advanced notice that the Mersey matches will recommence on Sunday 16th July … a month late but let's hope there are some decent catches. Ray Boden who will be running the matches has reported a couple of good sessions on the river the latest on Monday this week saw him catch on both the tip and float methods. He has caught bream to 5lbs, dace, silver bream, one perch and a small chub. Ne member Dave Etheridge reports that he has been fishing a few pegs up from Howley Weir over the last week. Although the fish were small, he caught about thirty fish per session. Dave found stick-float the most productive than the feeder although the bigger roach and bream hybrids were caught on the latter.
