11th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
The Weaver Navigation is certainly gaining in popularity with Jason Best who was there again this past week but on this occasion for a brief evening session. He stuck to his method on the pole between 5 and 6metres to catch another cracking net of bream, skimmers, and roach. Maggot and groundbait again did the trick. Malcolm Turner even braved the torrential rain on Saturday evening and fished the feeder on the venue for a catch of bream, roach, and perch.
However, the best catches on this venue this past week are a toss-up between Simon Oldfield and Tony Farrington, the latter with over a hundred roach plus a few bream and dace which he estimates at around 30lbs, all caught on the short whip and maggot. Whereas Simon fed groundbait laced with chopped worm and caster on a top three kit plus three pole sections for a weight of around 35lbs…made up of bream, skimmers, roach, and perch…hard to choose but they both showed the potential of this fishery. Lots of complimentary comments regarding the mystery member who looks after the place.
Stuart Atherton enjoyed his Saturday afternoons lure fishing on the Bridgewater Canal between Walton and Moore with a trio of jack-pike and two perch. He caught then all using ultralight lures. Eddie Maine also had a decent result when he was also lure fishing on Sunday evening in the Lymm area. He caught three perch and a jack-pike which he reckons was around the 10lbs mark.
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at the Daresbury Laboratories. The winner, Jeff Stoll drew opposite the Labs and fished worm and caster on the pole for a nice net of skimmers, perch, and roach for a weight of 4-2-0. George Hollis made the frame again following his last week's win but had to drop a place to take the runner-up spot with a net of roach using pinkie for 3-12-0. Sixteen anglers fished.
The 1st Association Contest kicks off the Mersey matches on Sunday 16th July … a month late but let's hope there is some decent catches. Please note Ray has informed me that there are only 23 pegs already strimmed and any help would be appreciated before the match…or bring a stout rod-rest for a clearance session on the day. 😊
