2nd May 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Ian Brodie and his 9-year-old son Rowan are more often than not found with our team of volunteers peg building or tidying up around Rixton Claypits but it was a lovely day on Sunday and they rightly deserved a day-off so the youngster joined his dad there for a carp fishing session. Rowan was fishing a 16mm sticky bright pink pop-up and his experienced dad some secret concoction to hopefully, as dads hope, show his lad 'how it was done' …. well, the only one that was done was Rowan's dad who blanked as the mad keen youngster pipped his dad yet again by landing one of the newly stocked commons which nudged the scales just over 17lbs.
Last Thursday Neil Plunkett had Rixton Claypits to himself and with the fishery looking great it was also one of those days when everything goes right. He soon located the bream and setup a method feeder with ground bait and micros offering meat or corn on a short hook-length. Neil ended up with a bonus tench around 3lbs, three nice sized roach, and called it quits when the thirtieth bream graced his landing net.
Last week Phil Dawson managed to fit in a brief two-hour session at Grey Mist where fishing a waggler and feeding maggot and caster he ended up with three tench which gave him a few anxious moments on his light tackle. It is not an every-day method nowadays on this fishery but the float and double maggot did the business.
Ian Swain, a new member, and already one of our volunteers at Cicily Mill Pool enjoyed a couple of hours there on Monday where fishing the pole at 11metres and regularly catapulting in maggot with a few casters he caught about fifty roach. He had tried chopped worm but his reward of a cracking tench fell for his double maggot offering just before he packed up for the day. But although that was the end of his fishing session there was still some weeding to be done…. thanks Ian. P.S Lots of small tench in weed that is being removed which is good news for the future.
Jimmy Byrne enjoyed yet another session at this same fishery where he reports catching lots of small roach for the first three hours then a better stamp suddenly out of nowhere latched on to his double red maggot offering with a run of fish 12oz to a pound.
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery where bites weren't as frequent as expected. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was drawn on popular peg 1 where with the wind on his back went on to win with a catch of two crucians, twenty roach, plus a few perch taken on the pole using red maggot or pinkie for a weight of 4-14-0. Next door on peg 2 Alan Clarke ended up with a similar catch but only one skimmer for 3-4-0 to take second place. Eighteen anglers fished.
