16th May 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Chris Roberts was out at Grey Mist on Saturday accompanied by his daughter Mila aged 9years who is a mad keen angler with four years fishing experience under her belt.  She started off on waggler feeding sparingly but a change to a white fishmeal bait fished leger style tight against the lily pads saw her hook into a decent fish. She managed to play it through the weed no problem resulting in a cracking looking tench in the landing net. Mila was absolutely ecstatic to claim a new PB when it weighed in at 5-4-0 especially when it beating her dads current PB. Congratulations young lady I am sure we will be hearing about more angling exploits before long.

And another youngster in the spotlight this week, dedicated angler James Whitehead aged 15years who has been putting some time in at Appleton Reservoir, well, it really paid off big-time on Saturday. After an early morning start, he had only been fishing for ten minutes when his pineapple N-Butyric pop-up boilie was snapped up by what he initially thought was a tench but that soon changed when the fish which seemed to be coming in easy snapped off at the net. Thankfully fellow angler Phil Brown was on hand and scooped the fish into the landing net. James was absolutely over the moon when the mirror carp weighed in at 26lbs on the dot resulting in him blitzing his previous PB of 7lbs. He was so excited he rang his mum at 7am with the good news…she was naturally pleased😊 Well done James I'm sure that this is just the start of your angling adventure.

Martin and Steve Cockroft also had an early Saturday morning start at Woodshaw Reservoir and having the place to themselves had the choice of pegs. The brothers had a cracking day, and despite some fish getting ready for spawning they persevered and Steve ended up with five crucians up to 2lbs, a 2lb bream, and small roach. Martin had a brace of crucians and around forty small roach. Not as many fish as their visit last years, but as they commented, "It was a lovely day so any fish is a bonus!"

I managed a few hours at Cicily Mill Pool on Sunday using light gear on short pole I started catching small roach every put-in and then the occasional net fish on red maggots that were past their best. Then Dave Lamb turned up for his evening session and stood on the platform behind me… yes it went dead! He decided to set up and fish waggler loose-feeding maggots from the next peg and began bagging up with small roach and the odd perch. With a bit of banter going back and forth he eventually took pity on me and brought me some fresh maggots…they didn't change things much as he won the numbers game but I was happy to catch some of the clonking roach that we recently stocked😊

Mike Pritchard was at Statham Pool on Saturday where he reckoned that some fish were spawning but he still ended up with thirty small roach and a small chub. All were caught alternating between maggot and pinkie.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane which saw Mike Worley clock-up his first win of the year. He drew in the wood at Oughtrington and fished bread-punch throughout ending up with over a dozen roach and a bonus bream around the 4lbs mark for a total of 4-7-0. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up from the opposite end of the match but his catch was mainly on pinkie and also included a bonus bream which added to his twenty or so small roach weighed in at 3-15-0. Nineteen anglers fished.
