23rd May, 2023 Warrington Anglers association Guardian Notes

23rd May 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Nigel Jones and his son Logan aged 15 enjoyed their four-hour session on Sunday especially as it their first time out this year and also their first visit to the Mount at Buckley. Logan set up using a size 10 chod rig with a Scopex squid boilie and a small amount of particle mix over the top…result a new PB 10-8-0 common. His dad followed with a nine-pounder making it an all-round pleasant day for them both.

The ink was hardly dry on new member Wayne Murphy's membership card when this weekend he was very happy to land a stunning mirror carp from Sandiway Small Lake which weighed in at exactly 27lbs.

The Dynamic Duo (Ken Hewitt & Dave Gardner) were out and about again on Friday after Dave's enforced sabbatical due to hip problems. This time it was High Legh Fishery they chose for their hopefully productive session, actually Ken reckoned that it was really to use up some old maggots!  Well, after a slow-start things turned out well in the end with Ken ending up with about thirty mainly small roach and perch on waggler and Dave despite losing two carp had some better stamp roach and a surprise bream around the 3lbs mark. He alternated between waggler and feeder using the ancient maggots.

Garry Whitehead also managed to fit in a couple of hours at High Legh Fishery on Monday which ended up a two-all draw as he landed two mirrors and two threw the hook. Garry remarked, "Such a beautiful place for a couple of hours to relax." Sometimes size does not matter😊

With the better weather fish are starting to spawn around our fisheries and bailiffs already have taped off areas where fishing is not allowed during this time. Under no circumstances must anglers target spawning fish…if caught they will more than likely cease to be members.

The Mersey levels will start to be slowly lowered on Friday 26th May as the repair works are starting on Howley Weir on Tuesday 30th with hopefully the weir back up and working normally by the 1st June. Thanks to all concerned.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Daresbury Labs where the winner John Ashwin drew his regular pleasure session peg opposite the stick-ups on the short length. Putting his local knowledge to good use he was the clear winner with a bonus 3lbs tench, three half-pound perch, and small roach for a weight of 6-5-0. It was good to see our Vice President Geoff Brooks back in the frame taking the runner-up spot with 3-8-0 of roach and perch caught on pinkie and squat close-in. Fourteen anglers fished.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their membership book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with most days.
