31st July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The hot weather and almost no fresh water entering Cicily Mill Pool had an adverse effect on this shallow fishery where our bailiffs this week removed around thirty to forty bream and skimmers that had been dead around five days having perished along with this years fry in the low oxygen conditions. A visit from the Environment Agency Fisheries saw that oxygen levels had improved but water temperatures were still quite high. Hopefully the recent rains will have a positive effect. The fishery has been closed until the situation improves.

But for the efforts of our local volunteers another shallow fishery could easily have gone the same way but thankfully water pumped from the Bridgewater Canal and recent rains restored the balance at Ackers Pit.

This week thanks go to Halton Council who have arranged for a mechanical weed removal boat to remove weed that has taken over on the Sankey St Helens Canal since the Mersey Gateway Bridge works. Despite many suggestions any chemical treatment of weed in low oxygen conditions would have a devastating adverse effect on any fishery.

The change of venue to Mersey Walk on our Saturday Mersey Series this week saw committee member Mike Dench take his first win of the year with a bonus bream of 5lbs taken on pole and maggot. He added roach and perch for a total weight of 11-15-0. Dave Brooks was in second place fishing the same method with 9-6-0. It was great to see international match legend Kevin Ashurst back on the UK match scene and drawing coin.

The Tom James Open Match fished on the Mersey at Kingsway Allotments saw Jimmy Byrne notch up another win with a weight of 11-6-0 of skimmers, roach, and perch taken on feeder and maggot tactics. Rod Frazer took second place alternating between pole and feeder for 9-10-0

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal from peg one at Waters Meet, Preston Brook towards Warrington. George Hollis put together a net of skimmers and roach for a winning weight of 6-5-4 taken on both pinkie and caster. Runner-up Graham Belton fished pole and pinkie for an all roach catch of 5-10-11. Nineteen fished.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.
