17th July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Gary Sharples and newbie to angling Michael Forrester enjoyed a day at our small Mowpin fishery at Wigan. As luck had it they had the water to themselves and began by feeding pellet and grated luncheon meat. It didn't take long until Michael was into his first fish, a roach of a few ounces soon followed by others. Gary had a 2.5lbs common on luncheon meat and then the rudd moved in attracted by loose-fed red maggot. All things being considered there were no records broken but both anglers enjoyed their day set in pleasant and peaceful surroundings.

Dave Gardner fished High Legh Fisheries on Friday with his fishing pal Ken Watkin. Dave found it slow going whist Ken was bagging up on rudd, roach, and a couple of perch. Dave landed a carp and a couple of roach around the pound mark but the target carp were all congregated under the trees out of reach. However, both enjoyed a pleasant days fishing which is what our sport is all about.

Our bailiff reports on Sandiway Lakes are showing some good tench catches to 8lbs from the large lake and the small lake plenty of carp to 25lbs plus tench which always seem to be smaller on the 17.5acre water. However, I have heard on the grapevine (not yet confirmed) that a forty has come out of this fishery. This Saturday is the Endurance Riding Event where riders will be passing through using the centre track bridleway.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week was won for by match organiser Ray Boden with a margin of almost 2.5lbs over the runner-up. Ray fished pole and maggot tactics for a net of roach and perch for 8-10-0. Chris Wray fishing the same method took second place with a weight of 6-3-0.

Sunday's Briars Cup Open fished on the Mersey at Victoria Park was won by veteran match angler Alan Falkner with a catch of a few hybrids to 6oz, roach, and perch taken on pole and maggot tactics for a weight of 13-12-0 and a 4.75lbs margin over the runner-up Rod Frazer who had a similar mix of fish for 9-0-0. These weights are really great considering that due to the England football match it was reduced to four hours. Alan Faulkner was so overwhelmed with the win that he went for a quick dip as he was putting the fish back.

Jimmy Byrne won our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge on the opposite side of the bridge than the week previous. Jimmy weighed in an all roach catch of small roach 3-9-4 taken on both bread punch and pinky. Bernie Lee was in second place with 3-4-0.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.
