10th July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Head Bailiff Jay Makin was both wringing wet with sweat and bitten from head to toe by midges following his hard graft along with fellow volunteers at Saturday's working party on Grey Mist. So much so that he almost had second thoughts about fishing the venue that night, however he bivvied up and was rewarded with two mirror carp, losing a third in snags. The fish were in stunning condition and weighed 18 and 21lbs. He also included a decent sized tench which thrive on angler's high protein baits helping to make this fishery a popular venue for members targeting these red eyed olive beauties.

Steven Crewe and his son Lewis aged 12 years enjoyed their visit to our Offa's Dyke fishery at Treuddyn on Monday. They both fished a whip and maggot and enjoyed good sport with small perch and silver fish with Lewis catching between thirty to forty roach. Steven made the observation that although sport was good there was a lack of larger fish. We have re-stocked the fishery following otter attacks with bream and carp and installed fencing with a hotwire to deter such predators.

Ackers Pit has suffered these past number of weeks during the unusually hot weather as the water supply from the Bridgewater Canal has been out of action. Thanks to the efforts of our local bailiff Mike Monks who on several occasions has manned a small pump adjacent to the source of the canal supply there has been some oxygenated water going into the pit. Other fisheries are not so lucky and quite honestly, we are in the lap of the gods as a number are short of water. It comes as no surprise that sport is almost none existent as Steven Crewe and son Lewis can vouch following their short session at the fishery on Tuesday.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week drawn at Kingsway Allotments was won for the second week in succession by Dave Brooks fishing on pole and maggot to end up with a net of roach and perch for 14-8-0. Martin Lenihan fishing the same method took second place with a weight of 8-12-0.

Sunday's Mersey Series was won by well known Northern match angler Danny Sixsmith with a catch of small skimmers, roach, and perch using pole and maggot tactics for a weight of 12-15-0. The runner-up was Barry Chambers with a similar mix of fish for 11-11-0 using the same method.

Lennie Dutton won our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. Lennie fished the pole and alternated baits between bread punch and pinky to take mainly roach caught on the drop for a weight of 6-8-8. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 3-7-2.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
