1st November 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st November, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Mersey is at this time producing the most consistent weights with roach being the predominant species. Our Saturday Series match was won by Alan Birchall fishing with pole and maggot for a round 13lbs. Jimmy Byrne was in second place only a couple of roach light of a win with 12-14-0. Paul Bibby fishing his first Mersey match asked organizer Ray Boden if he needed worms but Ray advised he keep it simple and stick with pole and maggots. Result…. Paul came fourth and thanking Ray after weight-in reckoned that it was one of the best day's river fishing in years. Paul kicked off with the feeder but with only three fish to show for his efforts changed to pole and maggot as advised. For the record there were six weights over 6lbs which is not too bad at this time of the year.

That guy Boden notched up yet another win on the Sunday event despite a scare from Ant Higham aka The King of the River who appeared at the draw looking rather 'peaky' claiming he was in Halloween costume although looking at the picture he looked quite his normal self. Again roach featured wholly in catches and Ray weighed 11-5-0 of the red finned beauties taken on the usual pole and maggot method. Dave Hill was the runner-up with 8-7-0.

The Disabled & Over 60's match weights on the Bridgewater Canal dropped again this week and Roy Rogers needed only 3-10-6 of pole caught roach and perch to take his first win in this series. Held at Walton barely eight ounces separated the first four anglers with not a single skimmer being caught.  Runner-up Dennis Bate weighed in a similar net of fish for 3-4-5.

Our stretch of the River Dane at Holmes Chapel is always worth a visit at this time of the year when the dace and grayling for some reason start to show in numbers. Although maggots will undoubtedly attract minnows it is worth persevering as when the larger fish show up they will be much less of a problem. A small stick-float should do the job nicely.  Reports please.

We had a report of seven small carp deaths on Statham Pool and as you would expect we immediately reported the matter to the Environment Agency Fisheries Department. The fish had been dead for some time and could have washed down the feeder stream but nevertheless it is better to be safe than sorry in this current climate with quite a number of reports of fisheries being effected by outbreaks KHV. By far the best method to prevent the spread is to ensure that nets, mats, and equipment are thoroughly dried before use.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 8-30pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries. If you don't mind sharing your catch reports to help fellow members please email details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
