15th November 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th November, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our annual carp stocking went well on Saturday and although a lot less in number than in previous years (twenty shared between four fisheries) the quality of the V S Fisheries sourced fish was top drawer with seventeen over 20lbs and the smallest 18.5lbs. Grey Mist Mere received four as did Moore Quarry and Sandiway small lake, the final eight went into Sandiway large lake. It was the luck of the drawer but the Quarry ended up with the two largest fish weighing 24lbs and 24.5lbs plus the only common at 21.5lbs. The introduction of these fish almost makes up for losses throughout the year. Thanks to all who helped and especially to seven year old Ben Wilcock who carried out the important job of numbering the fish for photographic identification at Sandiway.

A number of members have been asking for bream and tench to be stocked into Sandiway Lakes but the problem is sourcing home bred fish that are cormorant proof. There should be some survival through natural spawning but this does depend on factors aside from predation.

I visited committee member Ade Green on Tuesday afternoon at Appleton Reservoir where he was targeting the resident roach stocks. Using a small feeder and double hooking with dead maggot he had sixteen roach up to 12ozs plus a brace of chunky perch around the pound mark. Ade had suitably advised couple of young members earlier who were unwittingly using fixed leads which in the case of a line break are almost a death sentence to fish as whilst towing the rig are quite likely to become tethered and starve to death.

With the onset of the colder weather predator anglers are planning to visit waters and hopefully latch on to some specimen pike or perch. In the interests of fish welfare one item of kit they must not forget is their unhooking mat.

The Saturday Mersey Series match was won again by Jimmy Byrne with 5-4-0 made up of skimmers and roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Martin Lenihan was in second place with exactly 4-0-0 which included a bonus 2lbs skimmer taken on the same tactics but it could have ended differently had he not lost three good sized skimmers in a snag.

The following day with the river carrying extra water the weights plummeted and Jim Gannon needed only twelve small roach caught using groundbait feeder and punch bread weighing 1-13-0 for a win. The runner-up was Paul Hitchen with 1-5-0.

Previous poor match results on the Bridgewater were reversed for this weeks Disabled & Over 60's match at Houghs Bridge, even outstripping the River Mersey weekend fixtures. George Barber made it two in a row repeating his win the previous week with an all roach catch taken on pole and bread punch tactics for a weight of 7-7-5. He had between 120 and 130 small roach and caught on his first put in. Derek Bibby was second with 6-10-4. There were a few pike hooked and Alan Brown lost one but landed another around the 6lbs mark … they don't count in our matches.
