29th November 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th November, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is with sadness that I report the death of Joe Myers from Trough House Farm. Our condolences go out to his wife Christine and family.

Those members who fish our stretch of the Ribble will be aware that due to the kindness of Joe who was both an accomplished angler and longtime member of Warrington Anglers Association they were able to fish the upstream part as he allowed them to park their vehicles in his farmyard without charge. After Joe was diagnosed with terminal cancer just before Christmas last year it is the measure of the man that he was concerned that our parking in his farm be put on a permanent basis as the future was so uncertain. I must admit that this action really touched me in that he was thinking about others at such a time. The result is that this past week a new carpark that we share jointly with Prince Albert was duly completed.

Due to a fall in attendance the Saturday Mersey Series matches have been put on hold but will be reinstated if there are sufficient numbers of members interested. Our Sunday Mersey matches are taking place as normal but the draw time has been altered to 9-45am.

On Sunday, the weights were predictably low again and as this is the time of the year when catching small fish on a quiver tip really comes into play it was really no surprise to see last week's winner, the tip-master himself Paul Harding clock up another. He fished a groundbait feeder and maggot for an all roach catch of 3-6-0. The runner-up was Roy Everson fishing the same method with 2-15-0. Fish were tightly shoaled and the top four anglers were all bang on the money in more ways than one.

This weeks Disabled & Over 60's match fished again in the Dead Length saw Derek Bibby take the win with an all roach catch for a weight of 4-13-6. The match was dominated by small silver fish but second placed Keith Wernham persevered with caster and found a few larger roach for exactly 4lbs.

With the onset of the colder weather and the possibility of fisheries iced over the number of catch reports I receive from members understandably falls in proportion so if you don't mind sharing your catch reports to help fellow members please email catch details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 8-30pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries.

22nd November 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd November, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is always as a last resort when your management committee withdraw membership for serious breaches of our rules. Last week two members were banned for leaving litter and amazingly expected not to lose their membership for a first offence. Quite frankly leaving litter shows a complete disregard for all our sport stands for. Another member was banned after being repeatedly warned by our bailiff to reel in his extra rod and even worse left his baited rods unattended. The latter aside from breaching Environment Agency fisheries legislation can easily result in a fish being tethered and possibly condemning it to a slow death by starvation.

I realise at this time of the year that river conditions can change overnight but the tiny River Dane is worth a visit as in the past few weeks members have reported catches of both chub and grayling. The trick is bigger baits to avoid the minnows and that is exactly what Alan green did when after being plagued by these voracious little feeders he changed to legered luncheon meat which stopped the tiny rod tip quivers and bingo when the tip eventually moved again there was no mistaking that it was a real bite as it slammed round and he was into his first Dane chub. At around 2.5lbs not a monster but as it was followed by four others around the same stamp plus a small grayling that also had a taste for meat it was good sport nevertheless.

Due to adverse river conditions the Saturday Mersey Series match was cancelled but the band of hardy Mersey devotees were out the following day to support our annual 'Christmas' prize match which is sponsored annually by our Association. Paul Harding clocked up his first win of the year with 1-9-0 of fifteen small roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Paul's sidekick, Ant Higham aka The King of the River was in second place using the same method and weighed in twelve fish for a weight of 1-4-12. Many thanks to committee member Ade Green whose well-practiced shopping skills ensured every angler received a prize.

This weeks Disabled & Over 60's match fished in the Dead Length saw George Barber add to his successful results of previous weeks to make it a triple consecutive win. He fished his usual pole and bread punch tactics and for good measure winkled out a few perch with pinkie for a clear win with a predominantly roach catch weighing 4-2-12. Alan Brown was the runner-up with 2-12-12.

15th November 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th November, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our annual carp stocking went well on Saturday and although a lot less in number than in previous years (twenty shared between four fisheries) the quality of the V S Fisheries sourced fish was top drawer with seventeen over 20lbs and the smallest 18.5lbs. Grey Mist Mere received four as did Moore Quarry and Sandiway small lake, the final eight went into Sandiway large lake. It was the luck of the drawer but the Quarry ended up with the two largest fish weighing 24lbs and 24.5lbs plus the only common at 21.5lbs. The introduction of these fish almost makes up for losses throughout the year. Thanks to all who helped and especially to seven year old Ben Wilcock who carried out the important job of numbering the fish for photographic identification at Sandiway.

A number of members have been asking for bream and tench to be stocked into Sandiway Lakes but the problem is sourcing home bred fish that are cormorant proof. There should be some survival through natural spawning but this does depend on factors aside from predation.

I visited committee member Ade Green on Tuesday afternoon at Appleton Reservoir where he was targeting the resident roach stocks. Using a small feeder and double hooking with dead maggot he had sixteen roach up to 12ozs plus a brace of chunky perch around the pound mark. Ade had suitably advised couple of young members earlier who were unwittingly using fixed leads which in the case of a line break are almost a death sentence to fish as whilst towing the rig are quite likely to become tethered and starve to death.

With the onset of the colder weather predator anglers are planning to visit waters and hopefully latch on to some specimen pike or perch. In the interests of fish welfare one item of kit they must not forget is their unhooking mat.

The Saturday Mersey Series match was won again by Jimmy Byrne with 5-4-0 made up of skimmers and roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Martin Lenihan was in second place with exactly 4-0-0 which included a bonus 2lbs skimmer taken on the same tactics but it could have ended differently had he not lost three good sized skimmers in a snag.

The following day with the river carrying extra water the weights plummeted and Jim Gannon needed only twelve small roach caught using groundbait feeder and punch bread weighing 1-13-0 for a win. The runner-up was Paul Hitchen with 1-5-0.

Previous poor match results on the Bridgewater were reversed for this weeks Disabled & Over 60's match at Houghs Bridge, even outstripping the River Mersey weekend fixtures. George Barber made it two in a row repeating his win the previous week with an all roach catch taken on pole and bread punch tactics for a weight of 7-7-5. He had between 120 and 130 small roach and caught on his first put in. Derek Bibby was second with 6-10-4. There were a few pike hooked and Alan Brown lost one but landed another around the 6lbs mark … they don't count in our matches.

8th November 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th November, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A bit of good news is that our annual stocking program of pre-ordered VS Fisheries carp takes place on Saturday kicking off as usual at Grey Mist Mere around 12 noon followed by Moore Quarry and then on to Sandiway Lakes. There are twenty fish around the 20lbs mark although we never know exact weights until they are weighed at the venues on the day. All interested members welcome and anyone with a decent camera is especially so as our 'official photographer' is away on holiday.

Still on the carp scene (quiet, or should I say secretive for the past few weeks or so) Appleton Reservoir is still producing a few fish. Nick Sergeant had a nice mirror of 24lbs on Monday and the next day a member who had blanked on the water on his first three visits landed a mirror just short of 20lbs witnessed by committee member Ade Green who himself  had been catching a few roach on bread feeder from the wall.

Match results on the Bridgewater are poor although this is the time when the travelling light 'drop-shotting' members come into their own as the colour starts to drop out of the canal. Dennis Halpern reports catching five pike from 5lbs to the best at 11-8-0 along with two perch around the pound mark from the Lymm area.

Our Saturday Mersey Series match was won by Jimmy Byrne with 8-7-0 of roach taken on pole and maggot. Ray Boden was in second place with 4-10-0.

The following day Boden was back in the winners spot on Sunday's event with 9-5-5 of roach plus three perch, weaving more of his pole magic. Members keep asking me what his secret is and all I can say is he is an exceptional angler and a master of the Mersey. Runner-up was the same as last week, Dave Hill with 6-15-0 and in fact the next two places were the same names as last week.

The Disabled & Over 60's match saw low weights again on the Bridgewater Canal and George Barber who I have no doubt was fishing his favourite bread punch was the clear winner with 3-4-0 over double the weight of second places Mick Daniels who weighed in at 1-5-0.

1st November 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st November, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Mersey is at this time producing the most consistent weights with roach being the predominant species. Our Saturday Series match was won by Alan Birchall fishing with pole and maggot for a round 13lbs. Jimmy Byrne was in second place only a couple of roach light of a win with 12-14-0. Paul Bibby fishing his first Mersey match asked organizer Ray Boden if he needed worms but Ray advised he keep it simple and stick with pole and maggots. Result…. Paul came fourth and thanking Ray after weight-in reckoned that it was one of the best day's river fishing in years. Paul kicked off with the feeder but with only three fish to show for his efforts changed to pole and maggot as advised. For the record there were six weights over 6lbs which is not too bad at this time of the year.

That guy Boden notched up yet another win on the Sunday event despite a scare from Ant Higham aka The King of the River who appeared at the draw looking rather 'peaky' claiming he was in Halloween costume although looking at the picture he looked quite his normal self. Again roach featured wholly in catches and Ray weighed 11-5-0 of the red finned beauties taken on the usual pole and maggot method. Dave Hill was the runner-up with 8-7-0.

The Disabled & Over 60's match weights on the Bridgewater Canal dropped again this week and Roy Rogers needed only 3-10-6 of pole caught roach and perch to take his first win in this series. Held at Walton barely eight ounces separated the first four anglers with not a single skimmer being caught.  Runner-up Dennis Bate weighed in a similar net of fish for 3-4-5.

Our stretch of the River Dane at Holmes Chapel is always worth a visit at this time of the year when the dace and grayling for some reason start to show in numbers. Although maggots will undoubtedly attract minnows it is worth persevering as when the larger fish show up they will be much less of a problem. A small stick-float should do the job nicely.  Reports please.

We had a report of seven small carp deaths on Statham Pool and as you would expect we immediately reported the matter to the Environment Agency Fisheries Department. The fish had been dead for some time and could have washed down the feeder stream but nevertheless it is better to be safe than sorry in this current climate with quite a number of reports of fisheries being effected by outbreaks KHV. By far the best method to prevent the spread is to ensure that nets, mats, and equipment are thoroughly dried before use.
