16th June 2015 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

16th June, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes. Here I am writing this column when I should really be fishing somewhere celebrating the opening of the coarse fish close season on rivers. Well I suppose after my trip to Ireland last week it is a fair penance when on a red letter day near to Holy Island on Lough Derg all four of us could not lift our nets of large bream, hybrids, and roach.

However our bailiff on the Dee Mike Lewis fished swims at Worthenbury using a maggot feeder he caught lots of small chub and dace but nothing of any size. It was the same story on the Mersey when Martin James who was there at first light had only a few small fish to show for his efforts. He witnessed another angler running a stick float land a chub but Martin did comment though that the river looks great. He also reports catching a brace of 1.5lbs perch on lures from the Bridgewater in the week.

Nick Roberts along with his nine year old son fished Cicely Mill Pool on Saturday and settled on a peg on the short bank. Using the pole and fishing just off the edge of the weed it certainly looked idyllic, however all was not as it seemed and they could not get a bite on corn or punched meat for love nor money. A change to red maggot saw fortunes change with a nice run of 8oz roach plus smaller ones and perch. As sport slowed after an hour they were left watching the 'submarines' cruising around in the sun. With Sam getting bored Nick found a bronze maggot in amongst the reds and joked, "Watch this then". His float had only settled for a second when it shot away and as he watched the fluorescent orange elastic stretch to 20 metres he realised he was into a decent fish. The end result was a bewildered 11.5lbs common carp that went absolutely berserk in the small landing net.

With his winning net of 6-13-6 Jimmy Byrne had a couple of pounds margin over second placed John Dagnall with 4-15-8. John led the pack from thereon in with two further catches of over 4lbs following. The usual tried and tested method of bread punch and pole scored again proving to be the best method overall.

The Woodshaw Junior Series held on Monday saw Dane Rawlinson take an early lead to win the match with 19-13-0 of roach, crucians, and tench taken on pole and pellet. Matt Dawber fished a similar method and was in second place with 8-10-0. Don't forget this weekly series is open to all our junior members so if you are interested drop me an email for details.

A reminder that with the exception of parts of the Mersey, Sankey St Helens Canal, and Worthington Lakes where day permits are available from outlets prior to fishing all others are members only. Also alcohol is a definite licence loser … no excuses as the rules are clear enough it is not allowed on any of our fisheries.

Please email me your catch reports to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or you can ring me on 01928 716238. Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open on Friday between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, and any queries. Frank Lythgoe
