5th March 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
If anyone has any idea of the identity of the persons responsible for dumping leylandii pruning's on the car park at our members only Grey Mist mere Fishery please let me know immediately. The removal has cost Warrington Anglers members money to dispose of them legally, aside from the complete waste of time and manpower it involved. There is of course the possibility that a member has left the barrier open in which case if we find that person he/she will no longer be a member.
A few decent pike have been caught this past week from various fisheries but easily the best picture I was shown was that of an 18-6-0 fish caught by Pete Dempsey from the Mersey on Friday. His mate John Crossland actually had the first run and was playing a lively fish which turned out to be a twelve pounder when his other rod went, Pete obligingly stepped into the breech and landed the larger fish, well, that's what mates are for.
On the match scene this week it was a complete washout. On the Mersey it was marginally better when it was won by Pete Jones with 1-5-10 catch of small roach taken on a small groundbait feeder just ahead of Eddie Frangleton on 1-4-5. Our Disabled & Over 60's event fished on the Bridgewater near Thomasons Bridge was won with I believe something of a record weight for Derek Bibby who put the grand total of 3-4 on the scales (that's ounces!). Yes, it's fair to say sport was poor and in complete contrast to the 7-15-12 catch of the previous week.
Don't forget if you fancy a river visit you had better get your skates on as they are closed to coarse fishing between the 15th March and the 15th June. I say the same thing every year that it is a great pity that the Environment Agency did not comply with the Salmon & Freshwater Fisheries Review Group recommendation and conduct a full scientific Close Season Review. I am not a scientist but surprisingly could save them a ruck of time and money as there is no known scientific reason to impose this draconian measure; save that is to assist the poachers who will immediately move in unopposed whilst anglers are absent from the waterside. These criminals will cause far more damage to our declining river fish stocks than that caused inadvertently by genuine anglers. Wake up somebody please!
Thanks a million to those members who have already sent me their pictures to grace our boards or rolling display at the Northern Carp Show. I'm still touting so don't be shy as time is short.
Don't forget your catch reports are invaluable to this column and fellow members. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9-00pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
