26th March 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

26th March 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Well, the Northern Angling Show at Event City, at Manchester's Trafford Centre has been and gone and although it did not attract the numbers of visitors hoped for it was still in my eyes a success. It is fair to say that the weather must have had a bearing on attendances but more importantly it was the first of I hope many such shows. We were busy on our stand throughout and it was great to chat to our members, new members, and potential members. We will be back next year. Thanks to our volunteers who helped set up and man our stand, also to all those who donated their carp pics which attracted so much interest. I was especially proud of the two youngest members of our team aged 15 and 16years of age who demonstrated that we have no need to fear for the future of our sport.

The final round of the WAA Local League was fished on the Bridgewater canal at Walton on Saturday. Leading up to the match first and second teams were split by a slender 5 point lead for the Cheshire Gold over Saints. The third and fourth teams (Bob's lot and Black Claggers) were tied on 123 points, so fierce competition for the last prize place of third was on the cards.

On the individual front, Ross Wightman has all but secured top spot, and only a failure to trouble the scales would enable the gifted youngster Adam Harman, fishing in his first full year of adult competition, to pip him and take the top spot.

Despite being a man down, the consistent Saints lads came through in fine style to finish the match with 14 points, and saw Cheshire Gold limping home with only 8 points despite fielding a full team. Saints rose to the top and won the league beating Cheshire Gold into second place by a single point!

On the day, a very consistent and determined Black Claggers outfit, led by the impressive performance of Captain Kev Green, stormed to victory on the day in record breaking style, winning the match with a total of 23 points from a possible 24. It got even better when the match winner's peg was drawn as the bonus peg. Kev Green is one skilful lucky so and so and £200 better off to boot!

Many thanks to Craig Ritchie for organizing and running a great Local League once again, and I hope that other local sides will be encouraged to enter into the spirit of things in the future.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal in the Dead Length was won by Jimmy Byrne with 9-5-0 of skimmer bream taken on pole fished caster and bread at 12metres. Runner-up was match organiser John Dagnall with an all roach catch of 7-5-0 taken on pole and caster fished just short of the far shelf. The canal fished its head off and you had to have over 3lbs to be in with a shout of a section win.

Our AGM on Friday evening due to the prevailing weather conditions was the worst I have ever attended. Thanks to the many members for taking the trouble to ring through or email their apologies. The subscriptions increase (the first for six years) was voted in and will apply to all but junior memberships. It will come into force in 2014.

Your catch reports are invaluable to this column and fellow members. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9-00pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
