12th February 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th February 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

February has been a lucky month so far for member Chris Haye in the shape of a personal best mirror carp which he caught from Cicily Mill Pool. The absolutely stunning fish weighed in at 19-4-0 and fell for a 15mm pineapple boilie fished on a standard hair rig and a size 10's hook with just a scattering of ten of free offerings. He had a couple of half-hearted takes before latching into the big fish and even managed to land a 4lbs jack pike that swam into his line!

Following a virtual feeding frenzy on Grey Mist Mere at the start of the month when carp were moving about as though it was summer, well I am informed that there is little happening now due to the change in weather conditions. A few small jack pike have been caught but our stretch of the Mersey behind the Mist is a much better prospect where on Monday one angler had two fish of 9 and 13lbs taken on lures. There is also a realistic chance that specimen could be on the cards.

Warrington Anglers Winter League on Saturday was fished on our stretch of the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton and produced some cracking winter weights. Ros Wightman took the individual top spot with a mixed net of skimmers, roach, and perch for 14-5-0 alternating between bread, worm, and caster he fished on the pole at 12metres. Andy Gough was runner-up with a superb all roach catch of 10-8-0 taken on bread and caster. The top five weights all broke the 7lbs barrier. Team honours went to Saints with 19points and saw both Bob's Lot and Black Claggers tie for second place with 16points apiece. Overall it is really close but Cheshire Angling Gold on 114 are still in the lead and managing to keep ahead of Saints by a four point margin with just two matches remaining plus one that is to be re-arranged.

In contrast the Disabled & Over 60's match at Grappenhall turned out to be the worst result of many years. In fact Graham Belton was the only angler to break the 1lb barrier when he added two 1.5 and .25lbs perch to his net of small roach for 2-4-8. Runner-up Jimmy Byrne worked hard for his meagre net of 11-6. Surely next week cannot see a repeat?

2013 membership cards will start hitting doormats next week. The leaflet offers a £2 discount on the entry price. Also our Juniors will all receive an insert advertising a full list of competition opportunities within Warrington Anglers.
