3rd January 2012 Warrington Anglers association Guardian notes

3rd January 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Helen Dagnall who ran our 'Mystery Pairs Match' on Monday wisely made a decision that the River Mersey was unfishable on the grounds of safety so the whole event was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Lymm and Walton.

Jimmy Byrnes took the overall individual honours from the Lymm area, almost doubling the weight the next placed angler with a cracking skimmer bream catch of 34-4-0 taken on the pole at 12metres and alternated between bread and caster. Runner up Pete Critchley also had skimmers for 17-9-0. In fact all the main weights came from adjacent pegs where the fish were obviously densely shoaled. The best weight from the Walton area was a disappointing 3-11-0 with the dubious honour of the lowest weight overall being taken by John Dagnall who weighed in just 5ozs. The winning pair with five points was Jimmy Byrne and John Cartwright.

Grey Mist Mere has been producing good numbers of carp, mainly the new stock with fish reported to 17lbs. With an ongoing stocking program of only top quality fish this venue will go from strength to strength. Ian Dobbs reports heavy cormorant activity but he still managed some quality roach on double pinkie.

On the subject of cormorants would members please note any sightings wherever and wherever they see them and go to the Angling Trust website and input their information on the 'Cormorant Watch' page. Access to this site to collate this vitally important information is free and open to anyone. Please just note time/place/numbers/activity (whether feeding or flying). So get online now if you want to see some sensible action taken to tackle the threats to our native fish stocks from this pest.

The Bridgewater Canal is still producing a few pike with the best reported over the holiday being a fish of 17lbs. I hope the Mersey is in form for the planned pike match on Sunday. The event organised by Baileys Tackle Shop will be drawn at the premises at 9am and be fished from 10am to 3pm. Sensibly there is a reserve venue on the Bridgewater Canal if the river is in flood. Please ring either Andy or Bernard on 01925 823441for any information.

Just a reminder for those members who are in their second year with Warrington Anglers that your 2011 membership covers you until you receive your 2012 booklet through the post in February. You need do nothing until this time and you are covered to fish; the only difference is if you wish to night fish in the meantime, then you must renew both the night permit and membership together to continue night fishing.

I would welcome any catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
