10th January 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
The Baileys Tackle Pike Series didn't fare too well on Sunday as the participants after a unanimous vote stuck with the original River Mersey venue and chose to ignore the inform Bridgewater Canal on standby as an emergency reserve. I am not certain whether or not the 29-14-0 fish caught from the river in December by the match organiser Bernard Anderson on pollen dead bait swayed the vote. The river was carrying extra water and running coloured helping in no small way to dictate the outcome of no fish caught.
On Friday Bernie Leigh reported a catch of three pike from the Bridgewater Canal of 9lbs, 17-8-0, and 21-12-0. All fish were taken in a four hour session on sardine and were witnessed by local anglers Keith Stockton and Ben Hogg.
Bernie is a dedicated pike angler and has targeted the Bridgewater Canal since mid-October and including these three fish he has caught a total of 34 pike from 4 different venues on the canal. All fell to dead baits with only three below 7lbs.
Steve Daley had three smaller pike around 7lbs topped by a specimen of 18-12-0 with all but one taken on float-fished dead bait from a different area of the canal.
Local match angler Geoff Shaw fished on the pole and bread punch at Cliff Lane and took around 80 roach and skimmers in a hectic session along with a pike of 13lbs that took an unhealthy yen for a roach that he had just hooked. The surprised pike needless to say was not put in the sweetshop (his keepnet). Geoff even had time to witness a 19lbs pike for another member. Busy day!
On our rivers Warren Cooper made the most of his Sunday on our stretch of the Ribble at Hurst Green where he caught pike of 10lbs, two at 13lbs and lost a bigger fish at the net. He took all fish on a perch lure.
Closer to home on the River Dane Martin James went back to basics in his brief two hour session and fished five swims taking a chub from each on legered bread crust. The fish ranged from 2 to 3.5lbs. Whereas Chris Gaughan caught four fish ranging from 2.5 to 4lbs sticking to the one swim on legered meat.
Just a reminder for those members who are in their second year with Warrington Anglers that your 2011 membership covers you until you receive your 2012 booklet through the post in February. You need do nothing until this time and you are covered to fish; the only difference is if you wish to night fish in the meantime, then you must renew both the night permit and membership together to continue night fishing.
I would welcome any catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
