9th November 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian

The weather has not been king over the last few days with heavy rain and high winds the usual Sunday Mersey match had to be cancelled. The pegs were inspected on Saturday and many were flooded and with a very high tide forecast for Sunday it was decided to cancel in the interests of safety.

However the predicted thirty foot plus high tide didn't materialise on Sunday probably due to the river being held back by the Manchester ship canal which was being run off in an effort to deal with high levels of flood water.

With the match cancelled Antony Higham decided to fish anyway and found himself a quiet peg near the allotments at Kingsway and fished for a few hours. The result was five bites and four fish three bream and a hybrid for an estimated weight of between 15 and 17 lb. A case of `sods law' I am told because apparently that never happens for him in the matches.

The Warrington Local League was fished on the Macclesfield canal and match organiser Craig Ritchie reported that the canal is in top form and well worth a visit for some really enjoyable fishing. Most anglers caught skimmers and roach and some decent tench were also caught  along the length of the match. The winning weight of over 14lb came from Booths Wide and second place from the opposite end of the match at Henshall Hall Drive 6lb was needed to win a section.

Sunday saw the Warrington AA team on the Trent & Mersey canal at Broken Cross in the Wirral winter League. Again the T&M was in good form and Craig was pleased to report he won the match and Warrington AA team won on the day which puts them just one point behind the overall leaders.

Feast or famine is on the cards at the moment though with more cold wet weather on the cards. Last week the regular Disabled & Over 60's match was fished by twenty six members and the Bridgewater canal fished as though it was midsummer just a week later, Monday was a day of wind and persistent rain, still eleven hard souls turned out to brave the elements and although the catches weren't big the camaraderie and competition was still as strong as ever.

The Mersey and Disabled & Over 60's Fur& Feather tickets will be on sale shortly from the match organisers or at Cheshire Angling.

Keep sending in your catch reports as they are invaluable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
