30th November 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian.

Sport has been out of the question on our stillwaters this past week save for a few unfrozen areas on our canal fisheries, either adjacent to bridges or where there is an inflow of water from a drain or such like. If you have an urge to go fishing then top quality sport can be had from such areas as the fish tend to congregate there in numbers.

Just one word of warning please do not venture onto the ice under any circumstances this includes smashing holes in the ice to fish 'Eskimo style' as the ice is presently too thick and all you will succeed in doing is potentially killing fish as the shock waves can stun them.

The rivers on the other hand come into their own under such circumstances and although sport is not necessarily fast and furious at least you can go fishing. Having said that, red letter days can be had on such rivers as the Dee or Alyn where grayling and dace are feeding. A few decent chub reported from the Farndon area.

I did say that winter sport on rivers is not always the greatest, a case in point is our regular Mersey match fished last Sunday where Harry Morris needed only 1-5-9 for a decisive win as others only put ounces on the scales. Nevertheless it was one of the few matches that actually took place and it's on again this Sunday as usual.

Jimmy Byrne was sussing out our river waters on Sunday and whilst looking for likely swims on the Dane he found a tube containing quiver tips which have obviously been lost by a member. If you contact me I will put you in touch with Jimmy.

The Mersey Fur & Feather tickets which will be held on Sunday 12th December will also be on sale from Cheshire Angling both are strictly member's only matches.

Keep sending in your catch reports as they are invaluable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 8.30pm for subscriptions, night permits, and new memberships (these can also be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk
