16th November 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian
Winter leagues are notorious for being on venues where it is a struggle just to get a bite, a fish can mean mega points for your team but not on the Trent & Mersey canal I am reliably informed. Not only was over six pounds needed to get a section win the catches were good across the board.
Winner Neil Buist had a good mixed net weighing in at 13lb 4 oz which included a cracking perch of 2.5 lbs a nice fish by any standards while second placed Barry Chambers had all roach in his 12lb net the match was fished at the Middlewich end of our holdings well worth a visit.
A member was told last Saturday that he was `not allowed' to fish opposite the Marina at Anderton by someone purporting to be the manager of the Marina. To avoid confrontation and spoiling his days fishing he moved further along the stretch. This information is incorrect WarringtonAA in conjunction with Northwich AA control and pay for all the fishing between Dutton and Middlewich as per the maps in the map book.
The area in question has become increasingly inaccessible over the past few years particularly for matches, due to changes in parking restrictions and access via Marbury Country Park. There are no restrictions by the canal owners British Waterways prohibiting fishing from the tow path although casting into the marina or at moored boats is definitely not allowed and clearly boats moving in and out of the marina and will cause disturbance.
Phoenix park water bailiff Mike Turton has managed a couple of sessions this week resulting in reasonable catches of roach and skimmers. He found the last couple of hours of daylight most productive, pole at 8m at 1.8mtrs deep where the bottom levels out, near the weed beds ideal, best bait single maggot. There have also been some nice pike showing in the 9-6lb bracket with reports of a fish of 15lb being caught.
The Dane was on form last Saturday Ron reported the river was in perfect condition with just a touch of colour, Peter Riley had two chub the best weighed 5lb dead on halibut pellet. Graham Bellfield had trout, three Grayling and two chub while his son Daniel had had six decent grayling by midday.
Following a recent query I have checked with the Environment Agency as to whether grayling may be taken or not from our river fisheries. The rule is that a rod license holder may take a brace caught on rod and line in any one day but only in the 30 to 38 centimetres size range all other grayling must be returned to the water.
The Mersey Fur & Feather tickets which will be held on Sunday 12th December will also be on sale from Cheshire Angling both are strictly member's only matches.
Keep sending in your catch reports as they are invaluable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
