30th November 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian.

Sport has been out of the question on our stillwaters this past week save for a few unfrozen areas on our canal fisheries, either adjacent to bridges or where there is an inflow of water from a drain or such like. If you have an urge to go fishing then top quality sport can be had from such areas as the fish tend to congregate there in numbers.

Just one word of warning please do not venture onto the ice under any circumstances this includes smashing holes in the ice to fish 'Eskimo style' as the ice is presently too thick and all you will succeed in doing is potentially killing fish as the shock waves can stun them.

The rivers on the other hand come into their own under such circumstances and although sport is not necessarily fast and furious at least you can go fishing. Having said that, red letter days can be had on such rivers as the Dee or Alyn where grayling and dace are feeding. A few decent chub reported from the Farndon area.

I did say that winter sport on rivers is not always the greatest, a case in point is our regular Mersey match fished last Sunday where Harry Morris needed only 1-5-9 for a decisive win as others only put ounces on the scales. Nevertheless it was one of the few matches that actually took place and it's on again this Sunday as usual.

Jimmy Byrne was sussing out our river waters on Sunday and whilst looking for likely swims on the Dane he found a tube containing quiver tips which have obviously been lost by a member. If you contact me I will put you in touch with Jimmy.

The Mersey Fur & Feather tickets which will be held on Sunday 12th December will also be on sale from Cheshire Angling both are strictly member's only matches.

Keep sending in your catch reports as they are invaluable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 8.30pm for subscriptions, night permits, and new memberships (these can also be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk

Winter leagues are notorious for being on venues where it is a struggle just to get a bite, a fish can mean mega points for your team but not on the Trent & Mersey canal I am reliably informed. Not only was over six pounds needed to get a section win the catches were good across the board.

Winner Neil Buist had a good mixed net weighing in at 13lb 4 oz which included a cracking perch of 2.5 lbs a nice fish by any standards while second placed Barry Chambers had all roach in his 12lb net the match was fished at the Middlewich end of our holdings well worth a visit.

A member was told last Saturday that he was `not allowed' to fish opposite the Marina at Anderton by someone purporting to be the manager of the Marina. To avoid confrontation and spoiling his days fishing he moved further along the stretch. This information is incorrect WarringtonAA in conjunction with Northwich AA control and pay for all the fishing between Dutton and Middlewich as per the maps in the map book.

The area in question has become increasingly inaccessible over the past few years particularly for matches, due to changes in parking restrictions and access via Marbury Country Park. There are no restrictions by the canal owners British Waterways prohibiting fishing from the tow path although casting into the marina or at moored boats is definitely not allowed and clearly boats moving in and out of the marina and will cause disturbance.

Phoenix park water bailiff Mike Turton has managed a couple of sessions this week resulting in reasonable catches of roach and skimmers. He found the last couple of hours of daylight most productive, pole at 8m at 1.8mtrs deep where the bottom levels out, near the weed beds ideal, best bait single maggot. There have also been some nice pike showing in the 9-6lb bracket with reports of a fish of 15lb being caught.

The Dane was on form last Saturday Ron reported the river was in perfect condition with just a touch of colour, Peter Riley had two chub the best weighed 5lb dead on halibut pellet. Graham Bellfield had trout, three Grayling and two chub while his son Daniel had had six decent grayling by midday.

Following a recent query I have checked with the Environment Agency as to whether grayling may be taken or not from our river fisheries. The rule is that a rod license holder may take a brace caught on rod and line in any one day but only in the 30 to 38 centimetres size range all other grayling must be returned to the water.

16th November 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian
As you would expect at this time of year we have been getting reports of good pike catches around the waters one member had four doubles ranging in size from just over 10lb to 19lb in a session on the Bridgewater canal in the Lymm area all on deadbaits.
Thelwall, Grappenhall and Walton are also worth a chuck on deadbaits like lamprey, joeys and smelts which are all good on the Bridgewater. Rixton has produced a nice pike of 12lb too also to deadbaits while Grey mist and the River Mersey are also worth considering for pike.
Charlie Farrell and a couple of mates chose the Trent & Mersey at the weekend  they fished on the Broken cross Pub stretch and had a bite a chuck on pinkie, squat, punch and caster. Charlie himself had 142 fish for just over 3lb. Roach, perch and gudgeon made up his net.  He caught nothing big but had plenty of bites to keep him warm.
The River Dee has been producing some nice mixed catches of roach, grayling and decent perch to 3lb in some areas. The River Dane has been very quiet, Ron the bailiff says he has hardly seen an angler on it for the last couple of weeks he has had it to himself but he wasn't complaining.
I noticed this catch report by chance on the website forum this morning, although not caught during this last week I thought it may still be of interest. On 5th November the bailiff had been doing his rounds and asked the only angler on the lake how he was doing. Hopeless couldn't catch a cold was the reply!
However half an hour later the formerly despondent angler was netting a 27lb 3oz carp it was his first fish from Grey Mist which he described as in beautiful condition. It must have given a good account of itself because he said he felt as though he had hooked and played a submarine!
Sadly there was no one around to take his picture with his capture. The successful method was 8mm yellow fishmeal boillie hair rigged on a size 16 hook.
Tickets for the Disabled & Over 60's Fur &Feather which will be fished on Monday 6th December will be on sale at next Monday's match  or at Cheshire Angling. 9th November 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian

The weather has not been king over the last few days with heavy rain and high winds the usual Sunday Mersey match had to be cancelled. The pegs were inspected on Saturday and many were flooded and with a very high tide forecast for Sunday it was decided to cancel in the interests of safety.

However the predicted thirty foot plus high tide didn't materialise on Sunday probably due to the river being held back by the Manchester ship canal which was being run off in an effort to deal with high levels of flood water.

With the match cancelled Antony Higham decided to fish anyway and found himself a quiet peg near the allotments at Kingsway and fished for a few hours. The result was five bites and four fish three bream and a hybrid for an estimated weight of between 15 and 17 lb. A case of `sods law' I am told because apparently that never happens for him in the matches.

The Warrington Local League was fished on the Macclesfield canal and match organiser Craig Ritchie reported that the canal is in top form and well worth a visit for some really enjoyable fishing. Most anglers caught skimmers and roach and some decent tench were also caught  along the length of the match. The winning weight of over 14lb came from Booths Wide and second place from the opposite end of the match at Henshall Hall Drive 6lb was needed to win a section.

Sunday saw the Warrington AA team on the Trent & Mersey canal at Broken Cross in the Wirral winter League. Again the T&M was in good form and Craig was pleased to report he won the match and Warrington AA team won on the day which puts them just one point behind the overall leaders.

Feast or famine is on the cards at the moment though with more cold wet weather on the cards. Last week the regular Disabled & Over 60's match was fished by twenty six members and the Bridgewater canal fished as though it was midsummer just a week later, Monday was a day of wind and persistent rain, still eleven hard souls turned out to brave the elements and although the catches weren't big the camaraderie and competition was still as strong as ever.

The Mersey and Disabled & Over 60's Fur& Feather tickets will be on sale shortly from the match organisers or at Cheshire Angling.

2nd November 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian
There were a record number of entries for our October 'Fish of the Month' competition, but the clear winner in the junior section with his first Rixton Claypits carp, a cracking common of 18lbs was Chris Giblin. His friend who witnessed the capture just missed out with his entry but for sheer perseverance and dedication he has been awarded a Korda carp care kit.
In the senior section Dave Harrison who had been trying to catch a double figure barbel for the past four years struck gold on our River Ribble fishery with a 12-1-0 specimen taken on the last cast of the day. The fish took an 11mm halibut pellet wrapped in his own paste concoction and wins him over £100 value of  Bait-Tech products plus a Korda carp care kit.

Well done to the Ladies Team England team for their success in winning the silver medal in South Africa last week, especially to members Helen Dagnall and Wendy Locker of whom we are especially proud.
Our Disabled and Over 60's match fished at Walton this week showed the canals capabilities when you needed almost 4.5lbs for a section. Ian McLean took first place with 6-3-8 closely followed by Jimmy Byrne on 6-2-0. Would you believe a member actually resigned his membership this week because in the last three visits to the canal he had not caught a fish!
The 28 carp mentioned in last week's column were safely released into their new homes in Sandiway Lakes. The larger fishery (53acres approx) on this occasion received 5 x 23 plus fish and as an experiment 5 between 9 and 11lbs. These were all distinctive mirrors so that their growth rates can be monitored.
The small lake (17.5 acres plus) usually receives the 'smaller fish' but on this occasion we put 3 x 22lbs plus in to add some spice along with 15 between 8 and 11lbs. This water for some reason has a phenomenal growth rate so we should be seeing some interesting results. The introduction may hopefully stir the large head of coarse fish into action.
VS fisheries stock are excellent although not cheap you get what you pay for, namely quality. Viv has a particular interest in our lake complex as he reckons we will see some real specimens emerge as the result of our sensible approach to stock levels.
Orders have now been placed on an ongoing annual basis for the next three years, so maintaining our little but regular approach. Fish have also been earmarked for Grey Mist Mere where reports are that the VS fish are doing quite well. Roach, rudd, and crucians are also earmarked for boosting stocks at various fisheries.
