5th January 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
With nearly all our stillwaters frozen solid except for a few ice free holes here and there most members enjoyed a cosy extended Christmas/New Year Holiday at home either in front of a blazing fire or with the central heating wacked up to the maximum. However there are those anglers amongst us who cannot survive without their 'fishing fix' no matter how severe the conditions.
This was certainly the case on the River Mersey on Sunday at our regular weekly event when nine anglers turned up for what turned out to be a fishing lottery (or was it skill) as only three caught a single fish each. So size did matter and Gary Mannion had the biggest weighing in at 9-13 followed by local tackle dealer Jim Shaw on 5-8.
Tony Jolley traveled from Wigan to our River Derwent Fishery at Darly Abbey on Monday but forgot the essential bait, namely maggots to tempt those hoards of hungry grayling that dominate this stretch. So try as he might his pellet and meat which he found at the bottom of his tackle bag just did not do the trick, still I understand the scenery was outstanding.
Bailiff Mike Burdock and fellow angler Pete Mancey just found enough ice free water on Sunday at Wide Hole to use one rod each sitting almost side by side. Mike had the only take as the light was fading when a magnificently marked lower double pike took his herring dead bait.
Don't forget 2010 night permits are now required and can be obtained either from HQ Parker Street or by post (membership must also be renewed simultaneously). With the current financial climate we have pegged prices the same as last year. Please include telephone numbers with application.
Manchester Bridgewater Canal Permits (Broadheath to Leigh and the Kraft Arm) are also available from either HQ, Monton Tackle (Eccles), or Trafford Angling. Prices seniors £20, juniors £5. If you are a full member you are covered for all our fisheries.
Please keep sending in your catch reports as they help both fellow members and your management committee in their continuous fishery evaluation. Tel. 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, new members, etc. Also new memberships can be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets (see our website for your nearest).
