12th January 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Solid ice everywhere on all but our numerous river fisheries, however there is still a problem reaching some of our far flung venues as driving conditions are still not ideal on country roads despite the current thaw.
Locally the River Mersey provides a chance of a fish or two, but it is by no means easy fishing, ask the nine fishless anglers who turned out for our weekly Mersey Series. Local rod Jim Byrne showed not only is he a skillful angler but also lucky as his name came first out of the hat to take the main pools win. However pike are active with fish to lower double figures being reported, one angler on his first visit last week had fish of 6 and 12lbs taken on sprat from our stretch behind Grey Mist Mere.
Mark Wareing reports catching small chub and a few dace from the River Alyn on a small stick float rig and maggot. His light tackle was severely tested by two lively brown trout around 1.5lbs apiece. Dace are the main target on the Dee where fish are shoaling, although at Almere Ferry there is more than a fair chance of a barbel, especially at the confluence swim.
I really cannot believe the complete lack of intelligence of some people having received several reports of persons walking on the ice at our Grey Mist and Ackers Pit fisheries. Surely after the recent drowning tragedies the message should be clear enough.
Please keep sending in your catch reports as they help both fellow members and your management committee in their continuous fishery evaluation. Tel. 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, new members, etc. Also new memberships can be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets (see our website for your nearest).
