25th August, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Around the stillwaters most seem to be producing the goods. Brian Heaney and Dave Ockeby are joining the steadily increasing band of Worthington Lakes devotees after a recent visit Brian described his visit to Arley Reservoir as `the best days fishing he has had since Grey Mist in the eighties' he and Dave had quality roach, perch and hybrid sport all day and they had two `slabs' over 6lb to complete the days fishing in catches estimated at over 80lbs!

Appleton Reservoir is worth a visit and with the lower water levels allows fishing almost all the way around except for the top end of course which is a conservation area. There have been some nice roach and a few tench caught on light feeder tactics.

High Leigh although weedy is still a banker especially for anglers new to the sport with plenty of small roach, tench and carp to be had. There is a work party planned in the near future to do a bit of pruning and general tidying and trimming so if you are available and interested in helping please drop me an email and I can put you in touch with the organiser.

Grey Mist is producing a few decent carp and general coarse anglers are finding it well worth a visit there are plenty of good roach and perch as Jon Stamper found on his first visit to the water

Although bites were pretty slow on feeder when he changed to float tactics close in he had a nice mixed bag of roach and perch including two pike which snatched his perch on the way in. Jon wasn't expecting pike and I get the impression didn't relish them and did well to land both fish on light tackle. Although he had a fifteen minute tussle with the second one the first was the slightly bigger fish and only the front three quarters fitted in his landing net.

Luckily both pike were only hooked in the jaw and not deep hooked so retrieving his size 18 hook and returning the fish was not too traumatic for captor or pike.

Plenty of nice chub are being caught on the Dane, Stuart Halsall had two at well over 4lb while fellow member John Astle had six around 4lb and five good grayling in his catch.

The river Mersey is still providing great sport for pleasure and match anglers with the last match weights of 58lb between the twelve anglers who weighed but I understand everyone caught. Gary Mannion took top spot with over 9lb of roach and dace on pole fished to hand from peg 40.

There is an extra members match booked for the coming bank holiday Monday see below for details.
