18th August, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Last week I mentioned a 14lb barbel which came from the River Wye the lucky angler was member Alan Wand I have now seen the `photo's and it is a cracking specimen which just illustrates the potential of this fairly recent WAA acquisition to provide excellent sport.
Around the still waters most seem to be producing the goods, junior member George Coulton had two beautiful tench at Grey Mist one of 6.5lb and the other 7lb.The successful method was maggot using a bait clip. Bernard Anderson had some nice fish during a recent overnight session, he was fishing dead maggot, on a mission to catch one of the big eels which are present in the lake. He didn't connect with any of the big specimens although two about 2lb responded along with a couple of tench and carp and some clonking roach. Steve Cartledge also on an overnighter had a nice pike which gave a good account of itself and that there were loads of carp moving and leaping around during the night so all seems well at the moment.
The `mist' is often dismissed by members as a `carp' water, severely underestimating the quality of the other species present. Most of which respond well to ordinary coarse tactics and baits but have definitely benefited from the high protein baits the `carp lads' put in. Worthington is still performing very well committee member Keith Hay saw huge schoals of bream on a recent visit and several decent carp.
An interesting report from the river Alyn was about a dead salmon found on the bank possibly taken by a mink or otter it measured 31.5inches from nose to tail not a huge fish as salmon go but I would think it would have given some lucky captor a fight and it would seem the recent heavy downpours have given the salmon a chance to get up the river Dee and tributaries in good numbers. Hopefully this will continue especially since the recent buyout of the salmon nets men.
The river Mersey is still providing cracking catches for pleasure and match anglers alike seventeen members fished the Sunday match and the total weight of the catches was 84lb.
Jimmy Byrnes's catch on pole and red maggot and caster was made up of 200 roach perch and dace. Most competitors caught on similar tactics.
Helen Dagnall and Dave Brookes had a quick session so Helen could check her `bolognaise' rods and tackle for the forthcoming women's world champs in Italy. During the session they each had over 9lbs of fish without any effort.
As is always the way just when the canals and the rivers are fishing their socks off the nights are drawing in and the evening match series coming to an end. The last of the junior/minnows matches is next week. However we hope to organise a continuation of the minnows/juniors coaching sessions into the Autumn. I am not sure what form it will take yet whether it will be an evening session indoors or a weekend session until the weather becomes too cold.
Please don't forget to let us have your catch reports and Catch of the Month entries for August, if you are not in it you cannot win it!
