9th June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Friday we are continuing with our ongoing stocking policy at Sandiway large lake with the introduction of over £5000 of mirror carp which include fish of 28lbs, 23lbs, 22, lbs, 21lbs, and 20lbs. Deputy head bailiff Barry (Baz) Fleming had a personal best 12-2-0 bream from this fishery on Monday morning on sweetcorn. The fish had spawned and showed obvious signs of cleaning off.

On Tuesday 16th June after a ninety day close season our river fisheries are open for coarse fishing. I am not going to mention conditions as the last time I did this we had a literal monsoon. All I will say is that it is about time the close season nonsense was dispensed with as there is no scientific reason for its existence. The very presence of legitimate anglers on the banks protects our nation's rivers and certainly is not in any way detrimental.

More good news is that on the same date after a long wait Ackers Pit is open to members who must only fish from the platforms provided. The committee has imposed a no legering rule on the fishery. Moore Quarry which was closed in the interests of fish welfare is also now open.

Ackers Pit was stocked over the past twelve months with quality fish at great cost to Warrington Anglers. We were lucky enough to obtain some pure bred crucian carp which are hard to find nowadays as they readily interbreed with goldfish. I was therefore horrified to find out that last week some kind soul decided to empty his garden pond releasing goldfish and Koi carp into the pit. Not only is this for the reasons given highly irresponsible but also illegal. Fortunately we have a lead which has been passed to the appropriate authority for their action.

The dynamic duo of Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham are back in action following the latter's impressive backward summersault into the Trent & Mersey Canal last year which resulted in Ernie having to rescue him. Unfortunately Ernie is no spring chicken and the incident put him out of action for several months. Anyway this past week they visited Worthington Lakes where they both bagged up with double figure catches which included perch to 1.5lbs plus chunky roach and hybrids around the 1lb mark. Both fished a 20ft rod and waggler method alternating between maggot and caster.

Our Wigan complex of waters are fishing well with members more than happy with the upgrading of their sport on Fosters Pools, Woodshaw Reservoir, and Johnsons Pool. New member Dave Grindley tried Woodshaw last week and had several quality crucian carp plus a personal best tench.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street will be open on Friday evening as usual between 7 & 9-30pm for subscriptions, new members, etc.
